A young boy was left crying as ICE agents detained his father on a residential street in New Jersey. A video of the encounter shows one agent wrapping his arms around the child while the boy pleads for his father to stay.
The footage was shared on Instagram by @thesidewalkschool2 and later circulated on X by @LongTimeHistory. It shows several federal agents wearing tactical vests surrounding a Toyota SUV with its doors open. Some agents have their faces covered, while others have “ICE” or “POLICE” markings on their clothing.
As agents take the boy’s father into custody, the child can be heard crying and pleading, “Please stay! Papa!” An agent then approaches him and puts his arms around him, apparently trying to comfort him.
According to the account accompanying the video, the agent tells the boy that his father is “busy” and will call him from the “office.”
The boy’s mother, who was reportedly in the passenger seat, remains at the scene with the children after the father is taken away. Family members claimed that the man had lived in the United States for at least 21 years and had no criminal record, per the X post.
However, his identity, immigration status, and the legal basis for his detention have not been publicly confirmed by ICE or local authorities. The video also does not establish where he was taken or what happened to the family afterward.
Internet Reacts to New Jersey ICE Agent Hugging Boy as His Father Is Detained
The footage left viewers heartbroken, with one writing, “This is so incredibly heartbreaking! I’m angered that this will not stop even though we had a blue tsunami.” Another commenter focused on the agent’s interaction with the child, saying, “I hope that man rethinks his job choice after that heartbreaking interaction.”
Others questioned how agents cope with the emotional impact of such encounters. “How do you do a job like this & sleep good at night??,” one person asked. One viewer described the gesture as deeply disturbing, writing, “They think that was a show of tenderness when it’s actually diabolically sociopathic.”
Another wondered, “I wonder if they feel guilty when they see the suffering they cause.” A final commenter added, “To be empathetic while handing down the pain is diabolical. Respectful and professional was already supposed to be the standard!”
Several important details remain unknown, including the father’s current whereabouts and whether the family has been able to reunite.
