A man in Texas shared his experience of allegedly being falsely accused of stealing from H-E-B because of the store’s AI-powered security system.
The man shared his experience in a Reddit post titled “HEB’s AI security falsely flagged me as a ‘shoplifter.’ Has anyone else experienced this?” He explained that he was shopping at the H-E-B location in Tech Ridge when an assistant manager named Robert approached him alongside a security guard.
Robert allegedly accused the man of shoplifting during a previous visit to the store. “You have stolen from this store,” he reportedly said. The customer denied the accusation, insisting that he had never shoplifted in his life. He then demanded that the assistant manager provide evidence to support the claim.
According to the customer, Robert asked him, “Do you drive a [color and model of my car]?” When the man confirmed that the vehicle belonged to him, Robert claimed that the store’s security system had flagged it. “Our security system has flagged that car as being associated with a theft yesterday. You need to leave the store right now,” he allegedly told the customer.
Following the accusation, the man questioned Robert about the evidence, asking, “What’s the license plate number? Do you have any photos of me supposedly stealing?” The assistant manager reportedly admitted that he had not checked the vehicle’s license plate number and allegedly refused to verify it when asked.
Robert then showed the customer a security photo of him leaving the H-E-B store. However, the man claimed that the image actually showed him walking out with groceries he had already paid for and that he was holding his receipt.
Pointing to the photo, the customer told Robert, “That’s proof of me paying for my groceries!” However, the assistant manager allegedly dismissed his explanation and responded, “I’m not going to argue with you. Get out now before APD gets here. And do not ever come back to this store.”
The customer eventually decided to leave the store to avoid further confrontation. Before leaving, he made sure to ask for the general manager’s name and contact information so he could reach out once he got home. He also claimed that the assistant manager had a security guard escort him out of the store. Expressing his frustration over the incident, the man wrote, “I shop at that HEB almost every day. It’s right next to my house. I’ve been a very loyal customer.”
What Happened Next
The day after being accused of stealing, the customer called the store and managed to speak with the general manager. According to the man, the manager admitted that the incident resulted from an error involving the store’s AI security system, which had incorrectly identified him.
“Yeah, we know it was our mistake. There’s an AI security system we use. It sometimes just misidentifies people’s photos and cars. We’re sorry. And thanks for being so cool about it, because most people aren’t,” the general manager allegedly told him.
The response left the customer concerned that other shoppers might have experienced similar false accusations at H-E-B. Expressing his frustration that the company was reportedly still using the system, he wrote, “And HEB is continuing to use this stupid AI system regardless!”
He then asked whether anyone else had experienced something similar before adding, “Also, I hope somebody sees this before they’re in an HEB and randomly get accused of shoplifting based on the model of their car.” It remains unclear whether the customer plans to take further action over the incident.
