The Baldur’s Gate 3 Monk Class requires the best build to function at its total capacity. The Monk class can be very overpowered, dealing strong and fast hits to enemies they encounter. Though, if your Monk build isn’t quite what it should be, your performance will suffer in response. With so many different options available, building up your Monk can be relatively tricky and can take a while to get right unless you have a guide to help you through the process. This guide will go over the best race and subrace to use with your Monk build, the best subclasses and background.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Best Monk Build
The Monk build we recommend is a bit different than the recommended settings the game offers for a Monk, but you’ll see how changing it up can be worth it soon enough!
Race & Subrace
A few different races will work well for the best Monk build in Baldur’s Gate 3. Which one you choose to use depends on the playing style you enjoy. We used a Wood Half-Elf, but these are some other options that could work well:
- Half-Orc: DPS/Endurance
- Wood Half-Elf: Movement Speed
- Lightfoot Halfling: Luck
- Drow: Stealth
Subclass
For multiple reasons, the best Subclass for a Baldur’s Gate 3 Monk build is the Way of the Shadow. Within the game, Stealth is highly looked over and extremely powerful. The Way of the Shadow helps in combat and while you are out exploring the world.
Background, Skills, & Proficiency
There’s only one background that genuinely makes sense for the best Monk build in Baldur’s Gate 3: the Urchin background. Urchin focuses on the Monk’s stealthier features, giving you additional proficiencies in Stealth and Sleight of Hand.
You should also make sure you have some other proficiencies:
- History
- Acrobatics
- Insight
Below is the order your skills should be in from highest to lowest and the values for each that we recommend:
- Dexterity: 17
- Strength: 14
- Constitution: 14
- Wisdom: 10
- Charisma: 10
- Intelligence: 8
The best skills for a Monk in Baldur’s Gate 3 are Dexterity, followed by Strength and Constitution. Dexterity helps with your chances of landing hits and getting higher damage, while Strength allows you to carry more and jump farther. As always, Constitution affects your character’s HP.
Monk Class Progression
Level:
- Unarmored Defense, Flurry of Blows, Martial Arts
- Step of the Wind, Patient Defense, Unarmored Defense, Ki
- Deflect Missiles
- Increase Dex, Slow Fall
- Extra Attack, Stunning Strike
- Improved Unarmored Movement, Ki-Empowered Strikes
- Stillness of Mine, Evasion
- Increase Dex to 20
- Advanced Unarmored Movement
- Improved Unarmored Movement, Purity of Body
- Nothing
- Mobile Feat
It’s important to make sure you’re choosing all the right level-up options, as that is really what makes up the build. Your stats are important, but without the correct feats and abilities, the build will fall apart.
