Larian Studios Announce Baldur's Gate 3 Coming to Xbox This Year

Xbox fans probably got the best gift they could have asked for today with the announcement that Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming to the console this year. It appears to have been somewhat of a rocky road getting Larian Studios’ generation-defining RPG onto Xbox. Still, it looks like significant progress has been made following discussions with the Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Coming to Xbox

Super happy to confirm that after meeting @XboxP3 yesterday, we’ve found a solution that allows us to bring Baldur’s Gate 3 to Xbox players this year still, something we’ve been working towards for quite some time.

The news that Baldur’s Gate 3 would be coming to Xbox consoles this year was confirmed on X today by Larian Studios founder and CEO Swen Vincke. He writes:

“Super happy to confirm that after meeting XboxP3 yesterday, we’ve found a solution that allows us to bring Baldur’s Gate 3 to Xbox players this year still, something we’ve been working towards for quite some time.”

The team at Larian has, in the past, been fairly vocal about the difficulties they encountered porting the game to Xbox. The biggest hurdle they faced was implementing split-screen co-op on the Xbox Series S, the less powerful of the two Microsoft consoles.  As a general rule, Xbox requires that all features of a game are present on both the Xbox Series X and Series S, which has led to the delay.

It appears, though, that a compromise has, in fact been reached between Larian Studios and Xbox. The game will be released on Xbox consoles with all of its improvements in place, but with the slight caveat that split-screen co-op will not be present on Series S. Players will be able to take advantage of cross-save progression between Steam and both Xbox consoles.

Baldur’s Gate 3 truly is a once-in-a-generation title and has enjoyed endless heaps of accolades. It’s ultimately good for business to launch the acclaimed RPG on Xbox sooner rather than later to capitalize on the hype surrounding the game.

It’s likely that an official release date for Baldur’s Gate 3‘s Xbox port will be revealed in the coming weeks. The PS5 version of the game will launch om September 6.
