2024 is going full gothic. Tim Burton has confirmed that Beetlejuice 2 has wrapped filming with a picture on his Instagram of himself on set (seen below). The filmmaker returns to helm the long-awaited sequel with returning stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara. Newcomers include Wednesday star Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci (The Matrix), and Justin Theroux (White House Plumbers).
Tim Burton Sits on Set and Announces Beetlejuice 2 Filming Is Done
Like many productions, the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes had put a pause on the sequel. The director told The Independent in September that the film was a day and a half away from finishing before needing to hit the pause button. At the time, he said he was “grateful” for getting as far as they did before needing to stop. Due to being as far as they were, the release date will not be shifted.
The filmmaker is back in the director’s chair. While working with the Scream star again after Wednesday, he reunites with the creators of Wednesday, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who penned the script. Plot details are largely unknown at the time of writing, though it’s allegedly set many years after the original.
Tim Burton is getting back to his gothic roots recently, like with Wednesday and filming Beetlejuice 2. The Wednesday Netflix interpretation brings a fresh take on the Addams family member, whom Ortega plays as the titular character. A second season will begin filming next year. The director helmed some episodes while serving as an executive producer. It’s currently unknown if he will direct more episodes in season 2.
Beetlejuice 2 will be released on September 6, 2024. The first film is available on streaming services to help viewers catch up on the story and be prepared before the sequel hits theaters.
