The best part of Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming up with unique and fun builds to tackle the many challenges the game throws your way. While there are hundreds of ways to focus your spellcaster in BG3, some players might want to create an entire playstyle around one extremely potent spell. Magic Missile is an enjoyable and reliable attack for any spellcaster. The best aspect of this spell is that it can’t miss and hits multiple times. Let’s discuss the best Magic Missile build in BG3.
Magic Missile Build in BG3
Magic Missile is a level one spell in BG3, meaning it can be acquired very early by spellcasting classes. One of your first companions, the Wizard Gale, can utilize this ability almost as soon as he joins your team. Here is the official description of the spell:
- Shoot three magical darts, each dealing 1d4+1 Force Damage. They always hit their target.
We are going to focus on an effective and easy Magic Missile build in BG3. This particular build is not complicated to create but packs a powerful punch. While players might think Wizard is the way to go here, we instead focus almost entirely on the Sorceror class. Wizard only plays a small role in helping grow the build’s utility.
Creating the Perfect Magic Missile Build in BG3
Let’s discuss exactly what you need to do with this Magic Missile build in BG3 as you level.
- Begin by selecting the Sorceror class and specialize in Wild Magic. This gives you the ability to gain the advantage on spell casts at the cost of maybe triggering a random additional magic effect.
- Make sure you pick Magic Missile as one of your first spells. Shield is a good second spell to pick early in the game. Cantrips don’t matter, but Fire Bolt is a good option.
- For this Magic Missile build in BG3, your ability spread should have at least 16 Charisma, 16 Dexterity, and 15 Constitution. Your other options can be spread as you see fit.
- At level two, pick Metamagic: Extended Spell and Metamagic: Twin Spell as your Sorcery Point options. These will dramatically increase your utility, though it is notable that you can’t Twin Spell Magic Missiles. However, it does help with setting up other spells.
- As you level, your spell choices are not something to worry too much about as you will mostly focus on one main spell and upcasting it to higher ranks in this Magic Missile build in BG3. Here are some suggested useful spells:
- Chromatic Orb
- Mage Armor
- Thunderwave
- Invisibility
- Misty Step
- Counterspell
- Fireball
- Haste
- Globe of Invulnerability
- At level three choose Metamagic: Quicked Spell and your first feat at level four should be Spell Sniper. Your additional Cantrip with this should be Eldritch Blast as it hits hard and is a good filler when you are low on spell slots.
- Your next feat at level eight should be War Caster.
- Stop leveling Sorcerer once you reach 11 and put your last level into Wizard. You could also do this at any point in the leveling process as it just allows you to learn additional spells via scrolls.
Useful Items and Gear
This Magic Missile build in BG3 will pack a punch just from utilizing the guide above. However, there are a few items that can help it stand out. There is a necklace called Psychic Spark that gives Magic Missile an additional dart whenever you cast it. You will find it at a vendor in the Myconid Colony in the north section of the Underdark.
Furthermore, items that give stacks of the Reverberation status are helpful as well, such as the legendary quarterstaff Markoheshkir found in Ramazith’s Tower during Act Three. This will debuff the enemy and eventually cause them to take additional thunder damage from too many stacks.
This is all you need to know to have a good Magic Missile build in BG3. There are other ways to take advantage of the spell, but this Sorceror 11 and Wizard 1 combo is the easiest to utilize and master.
