A family member shared a video on TikTok showing the family attending what appeared to be a public celebration or event. The video included the caption, “POV: You’re Black In America.” From the start of the footage, the family remained seated while the rest of the crowd around them appeared to stand during the national anthem.
At one point in the video, a young girl from the family asked, “Why are we not standing?” A woman responded, “We aren’t.” The person filming then panned the camera to show that the entire family remained seated while others around them stood. A woman speaking at the event could also be heard saying, “Please remain standing for the national anthem.” Despite the request, the family continued to stay seated throughout that portion of the video.
The person filming repeatedly emphasized that their family was the only group remaining seated by showing the crowd around them standing during the anthem. While the national anthem played, some members of the family could also be seen laughing. The video quickly spread across social media and sparked controversy, with many viewers debating the family’s decision to remain seated and the message they were trying to convey.
Viewers Criticize Black California Family for Refusing to Stand Up

Some reactions were particularly controversial and focused on race. “They hate America and Whites, BUT wants reparations from Whites. The [expletive] hypocrisy is so damn funny…,” one person wrote. Another person said, “It’s a cultural problem learned from an early age. Until they recognize the damage they are doing, it won’t be resolved. I have to say, not everyone within that culture is like this, which most decent people know.”
More people weighed in on the situation and criticized the family’s decision. One person wrote, “Rest assured, they’re quietly glad they live here. Also, there are plenty of black conservatives who do stand and proudly. Liberals of all backgrounds are the most miserable people in this country, if not the entire world.” Another person said, “Sad, they do not appreciate where they are. Not appreciated and are teaching their children not to be respectful. There are people who died for this Country at least respect them.”
