A confrontation outside a California movie theater has sparked debate online after a person accused a couple of talking throughout a movie. While plenty of viewers agreed the couple deserved to be called out, many others felt the person filming became somewhat obsessed with the couple and turned what could have been a quick request to quiet down into an explosive exchange.
The incident took place outside the Irvine Spectrum in Orange County after the movie ended. Throughout the confrontation, the person filming repeatedly used expletives while telling the couple to “have some class.”
Viewers quickly split into two camps over the clip.
California Movie Theater Confrontation Splits the Internet
Some people hailed the person filming as a hero who put rude moviegoers in their place. Others argued that the individual talking to the camera had blown things out of proportion, and should have just let both sides continue their evening in peace.
One person in the former group commented, “This is exactly how I feel on the inside every time someone talks excessively and loudly in a movie theatre, so I agree with this rant!” Another agreed, “This is why a lot of people (myself included) stopped going to theaters. The theater companies better figure out how to police the obnoxious people, or they’re going to lose all their customers.”
Meanwhile, a third person suggested an alternative to having a post-movie meltdown with, “What if there was a Batman vigilante type who sits in the back row and slingshots Whoppers and Milk Duds at the back of violators’ heads…“
While no one defended the couple for allegedly talking throughout the film, many people felt that the person recording their rant was the bigger problem. One Redditor wrote, “I agree with the sentiment, but [expletive] this annoying [expletive] moron. A 30-second video stretched into forever… and I hate that fake [expletive] vocal inflection.” Someone else echoed, “Can’t stand anyone involved, TBH.”
Another Redditor pointed to the filmer’s own admission that they followed the woman into the restroom to continue the confrontation, writing, “Maybe she was acting like that because you literally followed her into the bathroom just so you could verbally assault her while she was alone?” Many commenters agreed that, regardless of how the couple behaved during the movie, the confrontation had gone too far by that point.
In the end, the debate wasn’t really about talking during a movie anymore. It became about whether the person filming was justified in confronting the couple or simply made an already awkward situation even worse.
