People on the internet are divided after a video surfaced on TikTok showing a Michigan woman packing homemade tamales for neighbors who allegedly called Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on her Hispanic family. Her daughter, Andrea, shared the clip and explained that her mom had decided to respond to the neighbors’ actions with kindness rather than anger. While some viewers praised the woman for having such a forgiving heart, others felt she was being far too nice to people who had allegedly tried to get her family deported.

Objective: KILL THEM WITH KINDESS: 📌For everyone saying this is giving “pick-me” energy, my mom is deeply Catholic and genuinely believes that people can change through love, forgiveness, and setting a good example. As Oaxacans, we were also raised with the teachings of my Indigenous grandparents, who taught us not to carry hatred in our hearts, even when people hurt us. Even after our neighbors called ICE on us, my mom still chose to give them tamales. Not because she condones what they did or because she thinks it was okay, but because she refuses to let someone else’s actions change the kind of person she is. She believes in forgiveness, in leading by example, and in not allowing anger to consume your heart. You don’t have to agree with her, but this isn’t about being a “pick me.” It’s about the values she was raised with, the faith she holds, and the kind of person she chooses to be. 🤍love you alll!!!!💓💓💓 Tia wants to invite you all for tamales too some day #fs #paratiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii #fyp #immigrantparents #viral

The short clip first showed Andrea’s mom standing in the kitchen beside a large pot filled with tamales, a traditional Mexican dish made from corn dough. She took several of the wrapped tamales from the pot and placed them on a plate before packing them into two plastic bags.

Once everything was ready, she headed outside to deliver the food to her neighbors, with Andrea following behind and filming. The video, however, ended without showing the woman meeting the neighbors or handing over the tamales.

According to Andrea, the neighbors had personally admitted to calling ICE on her family. Even so, they asked her mother to bring them some tamales the next time she made a batch. Her mom, who was already planning to make some over the weekend, promised to set a few aside for them.

Despite everything that had happened, she still went ahead to keep that promise.

Viewers Praise Michigan Mom’s Kindness, Criticize Neighbors

The video drew plenty of reactions from TikTok users. Some expressed admiration for the woman’s willingness to show kindness to people who had allegedly treated her family so poorly.

“Hispanic moms are the most caring people in this planet bro,” one netizen said. Another commented, “Confronting hate with kindness is what a good person does… your mother has a pure heart.” A third wrote, “She is a true example of what Jesus Christ calls us to be God bless your mom.”

Several others had harsh words for the neighbors. “Calling ice on her and then requesting food from her is so evil and despicable. The audacity actually,” one person raged. Another remarked, “Your neighbors are genuinely evil spirited.” Someone else added, “I hope the guilt eats away at their souls.”

Some viewers also worried that the neighbors might not appreciate the woman’s kindness. One speculated, “Ur mom is so kind, but i fear the neighbors will just throw the tamales to the bin.” Another agreed, writing, “No way they’ll eat it they’ll think it’s poison.” A third even questioned whether being so forgiving was necessarily the best way to handle the situation.

“Won’t this just teach them that they can run over you and still expect good from you in return,” they asked.

Andrea Explains Why Her Mom Chose Kindness Over Anger

As the video went viral, attracting more than 3 million views and 500,000 likes, Andrea returned to the comments to explain why her mother had decided to make such a generous gesture despite what had allegedly happened.

She revealed that some viewers had accused her mom of displaying “pick-me” behavior, but insisted that her actions came from her religious beliefs and the values she had been raised with.

According to Andrea, her mother is “deeply Catholic and genuinely believes that people can change through love, forgiveness, and setting a good example.” She also explained that her family is Oaxacan and that her Indigenous grandparents had taught them not to hold hatred in their hearts, even when other people hurt them.

Andrea made it clear that her mother’s decision to give the neighbors tamales did not mean she approved of their alleged actions or thought what they had done was acceptable. Rather, she said her mom refused to allow other people’s behavior to change the kind of person she wanted to be.

For her, forgiveness was about staying true to her faith and values instead of allowing anger to take over.
