Brat singer Charli xcx has surprised her fans with an Instagram post featuring the headline from the Middle East Eye with breaking news that Israel is indeed guilty of genocide. Now, the reignited conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians has been going on for some time, with plenty of celebs and famous figures showing their support for one side or the other. The “360” songwriter isn’t a stranger to making political posts, as she was said to have posted a PCRF link last year. However, some fans still feel like her support is somewhat insincere.
While many feel that any pro-Palestinian post is better than nothing, others pointed out how Charli xcx is allegedly “friends” with the hosts of the Red Scare Podcast. One of the hosts, Dasha Nekrasova, posted edgy extremist photos of herself shooting a target that was dressed like a Palestinian. Charli XCX’s song from last year, “Mean Girls,” was said to have been inspired by Dasha, a somewhat controversial decision when you are posing yourself to be pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel. “It seems hypocritical,” remarks a Redditor, saying that you shouldn’t be friends with someone who shot a Palestinian target while also supporting Palestine. It doesn’t make much sense.
Some others believe that Charli xcx isn’t actually a supporter of the cause but is instead just trying to farm some clout and positive PR from this Middle East Eye post since the news is now “mainstream.” In response to someone commenting, “better late than never” about the “Vroom Vroom” singer’s post, one person said, “More like ‘better late since I know what the general consensus of the public is now and I know it won’t affect my image or PR anymore,’ than ever.” Of course, other fans were glad that she used her platform at all to publicize this vital news, with claims that she probably finally feels safe enough to do so. “More people speaking out the better,” agrees a user.
Still, many feel that Charli xcx and other celebs were doing the same thing, just waiting for a big bomb to drop about the Israel-Gaza conflict before making their support be known. So it’s difficult to actually know a person’s stance unless they publicly speak out about their opinions more frequently. Whatever the case, Charli xcx still has some explaining to do about her current relationship with Dasha Nekrasova if she actually wants to hold any ground with her anti-Israel post. Otherwise, fans are just going to see it as hypocritical PR speak.
