Outer Banks season 3 has been out for a little over a month now, and fans are still going crazy over it. The actor who plays John B. in Outer Banks, Chase Stokes, has recently shared some of what inspired his character, his wardrobe, and his emotional state during certain scenes. He revealed that Kurt Cobain impacted John B.‘s darker journey, while his fashion sense, for example, is actually the result of him missing his father. During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, he went on to discuss more Nirvana.
A Deeper and Darker Side To John B.
“I was listening to a lot of Nirvana at the time, sort of building the character in my head, and I said, ‘Kurt Cobain,'” Stokes explained. “Like, let’s do big flannels. Let’s do things that are out of the ordinary for where he normally is.” However, the whole connection between John B. and this famous singer doesn’t end there. Cobain, unfortunately, died at the age of 27 to suicide after struggling with depression and addiction throughout his life. It is obvious that John B. also faces many times throughout the season’s great self-doubt, loss, and even trauma from everything he has been through.
During an interview with InStyle, Chase Stokes talked about how Cobain’s life story and experience helped him set the tone for his Outer Banks John B’s character and background. “We’ve used influence from Kurt Cobain in the way that he’s been isolated and walked through the last chapter of his life because John B is surrounded by so much beauty, but his own internal turmoil is what’s driving him. He’s trying to figure out what path to go,” Stokes said. “There’s definitely some notes of that, that we’ve layered in the last two seasons in particular.” Outer Banks is available to stream on Netflix and has just recently been renewed for its fourth season.
