Last week the CW announced the next crossover of The Flash and Supergirl will carry a special tune, as each show will be musicals. While the idea may seem odd to some, Grant Gustin (Flash) and Melissa Benoist (Supergirl) are both Glee alumni.
The hit American musical comedy-drama television series – that aired on Fox in the U.S from May 19, 2009, to March 20, 2015 – will see a mini two night reunion, as Gustin and Benoist will be joined by Glee favorite like Darren Criss. He will play opposite of his former friends this time though, as Criss performs the role of eccentric DC villain Music Meister.
Fans of the comics and animated shows know Meister as the bullied choir kid who got his revenge with his singing voice. The villain’s voice can create a pitch so high that it hypnotizes people, simultaneously causing his victims to sing and dance, thus justifying the odd choice of making a musical in a superhero show.
Outside of the obvious three leading singers in Gustin, Benoist and Criss the CW confirmed other singing cast members on the ticket to be Jesse L. Martin (Joe), Victor Garber (Dr. Stein), John Barrowman (Malcolm Merlyn) and Jeremy Jordan (Winn); and Carlos Valdes (Cisco). Though they didn’t star in Glee, each of the aforementioned stars have plenty of experience singing, most notably Martin’s role as Tom Collins on Broadway in the musical Rent.
The crossover will air Monday, March 20 (Supergirl) and Tuesday, March 21 (The Flash) at 8/7 each night. Similarly to the previous crossovers, the plots order will follow the air date of each show, with the musical crossover being titled “Duet.”
