We all know that things have become extremely expensive in the country, from groceries and produce to gas. Yet, it seems that some citizens are having a harder time than others because, despite the high cost of living we are facing, the government is doing the opposite to alleviate it. An example of this is happening in New Castle County, Delaware, where its residents woke up to the sad news that they will get a tax hike of 17%. What makes the whole deal even sadder is that it seems this is happening to cover a budget deficit.
Today, New Castle County in Delaware has approved a 17% tax hike on properties to cover a budget deficit. According to the note by Delaware Online, property owners will be expected to pay at least $10 more a month to cover the budget deficit of $42 million.
It also seems that the government wants to cover this deficit to support public safety, as it will allocate more funds to it. Yet, while those ideas sound great and could help the county in the long run, some citizens are not too happy with the overall announcement because, in the end, they’ll need to pay more taxes.
Several Redditors believe that tax hikes should not happen in the first place, especially if the government manages its budget properly. However, it seems this wasn’t the case, and some residents speculate about who the culprits are regarding the deficit.
Delaware Redditors Speculate As to What Caused the Budget Deficit
After Redditors saw the tax hike announcement, some started speculating about what caused the deficit, and some blamed certain government expenditures that they consider unnecessary for the county.
“They’ve been burning up cash buying flock cameras and such.“
“Maybe if they actually used our tax money correctly, they wouldn’t have needed to take actions like this.“
Others, however, believe citizens should take stricter measures to combat tax hikes and have even suggested that changing some figures who are leading the county might be the best way to go.
“Regardless of political affiliation, we need to come together and vote these people OUT.“
In the end, despite the backlash, the price hike is still happening, and it seems there isn’t much citizens can do about it yet. Still, some believe it is always good to voice their concerns out loud, in the hope that authorities will eventually listen.
