Marvel Studios, with their parent company of Disney, and Sony, who ultimately owns the rights to Spider-Man, decided it would be best for both to make a third Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland the current actor to put on the web slingers.
You might be asking yourself why would they be working on another film together when Marvel and Sony said they’ve split ways back in August 2019? Well, that was to just grab everyone’s attention and more than likely lengthen the amount of time for further negotiations. Marvel and Sony may have struck a deal that works out in everyone’s favor.
Over the summer this year, there was news of Sony and Marvel reaching a wall when it came to how to divide the finances the character would bring to both studios. Disney wanted a split right down the middle in terms of money for future movies. Sony proposed keeping the current terms from their agreement for the first two Spider-Man movies. This would give Marvel about 5% of every first-dollar gross and merchandising revenues. Currently, there is no word on if this is still the agreement between the two parties.
Kevin Feige would remain as consulting producer for creative decisions for the film. Feige reported to Variety about the most recent developments between the two studios.
“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” Feige said.
Terms of this new deal between the two studios were not explicitly mentioned but we do know this partnership has been prosperous for everyone involved.
The first two Tom Holland, Spider-Man movies grossed over a billion dollars together, with Far From Home grossing $1.1 billion dollars making it Sony’s highest-grossing film ever. Sony is also still in talks of making more Spidey-verse movies based on characters in the series. Venom came in strong and a sequel is in the works with the post-production starting on Morbius with a release date of 2020. So far there hasn’t been any news on a crossover with Sony’s titles.
