Edge of Tomorrow originally released in 2014 to a barrage of great reviews from the critics. Although the film feels redundant at times, considering it constantly loops onto itself, the time loops that make it feel redundant are also what builds the suspense. One can give their reasons for disliking it, but one can’t deny that it was well-made. Doug Liman, the director of the first film, has been pushing for a sequel since after the original’s release in 2014. But he hasn’t been alone. Fans of the first film and even Tom Cruise have been pushing for this movie to get done. Now things are really starting to shape up, as slowly as it may be coming along.

Recently, Collider had the chance to interview with Doug Liman about the sequel. In this interview, he confirmed that Emily Blunt will be returning to reprise her role as Rita Vrataski and the sequel’s title: Live Die Repeat and Repeat. For those of you who have watched the first film, the title should sound familiar. Edge of Tomorrow came to theaters with only that title but was then changed for digital and home release to Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow.

Also in the interview, Liman stated: “I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are [he’s so excited that his grammar takes a backseat] unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea.” He goes on to say that this idea of a new sequel will change the way people think about sequels in the future, that the movie will essentially be a prequel-sequel. How ironic for a movie that deals with time and its effects. But this an interesting statement, as it could pave the way for a new era of sequel-making. Yet, the way Liman is thinking of making Live Die Repeat and Repeat may only work for that film. Considering the movie has to do with time loops, there may not be a way for other films (unless they are also dealing with time loops in some fashion) to implement this idea. Time will tell.

Time will tell, but not for a while. Doug Liman is currently directing DC’s Justice League Dark, Tom Cruise is on with Mission Impossible 6 (the writer of Edge of Tomorrow’s screenplay, Christopher McQuarrie, is directing this 6th installment), and Emily Blunt is starring in the Mary Poppins sequel, Mary Poppins Returns. Many of the major pieces to getting this time loop fixed are currently being tied down by other great projects, so it may take some time for the sequel to get off the ground. That’s okay because I’m particularly excited for Justice League Dark. And, hey, the more time they take making Live Die Repeat and Repeat, the better it is bound to be. At least we won’t have to relive this wait again!
