A Florida couple living in a retirement community faced a dangerous situation after one of their neighbors attempted a makeshift electrical repair on their property. The incident involved a reckless neighbor who ignored warnings and safety codes while working on temporary power lines.

Boomer assholes think they have power.

The story was shared on the subreddit r/BoomersBeingFools, where it quickly gained attention. The post received nearly 1,000 upvotes and more than 80 comments, accompanied by several photos of the DIY setup and a detailed explanation of what had occurred.

The situation began last October when a storm knocked out electricity to two neighbors, one cooperative and the other not. Florida Power set up a temporary emergency hookup from the couple’s meter to both houses. The three heavy cables were clearly labeled “DO NOT DISTURB” and “DO NOT MOVE” and were meant to remain in place for about 30 days.

While the cooperative neighbor moved quickly to resolve the problem, the neighbor repeatedly delayed repairs for months. Tensions escalated when the homeowners were away in New York, leaving the homeowner’s girlfriend and her sister alone at the house. They were woken by loud banging at the back door from the neighbor, who said he was there to “fix the problem with the wires.”

According to the homeowners, the neighbor had already dug a trench and begun laying conduit without permission. When asked for details, he allegedly refused to explain his work, saying only, “We’ll tell you when we’re done.”

Concerned, the homeowners called a construction-savvy neighbor to inspect the work. The neighbor found multiple code violations, including improperly rated wiring and unsafe conduit installation. When he tried to point out the issues, the neighbor and his electrician reportedly yelled at him to “mind his own business and leave.”

The homeowners then contacted Florida Power’s emergency line. A technician arrived within an hour, inspected the site, and called it one of the worst setups he had ever seen. He told the neighbor, “This lady has been kind enough to let you piggyback off her meter for months, and this is how you repay her? She could have your power turned off right now if she wanted.”

The homeowners gave the neighbor 30 more days to complete proper repairs. He subsequently had to call his electrician back to disconnect the unsafe work.

Reddit users reacted strongly to the story, criticizing the Florida neighbor for reckless behavior and a lack of gratitude. Many suggested the homeowners should refuse any further help, while others recommended taking legal action. “Get a lawyer,” one user wrote.

The incident has gained attention because it illustrates the real dangers of DIY electrical work, the risks of ignoring safety codes, and the tensions that can arise between neighbors when responsibility and safety are ignored.
