One particular Trump supporter from North Carolina is drawing some heavy backlash online, mainly because of the name of his group: Gays for Trump. And despite some alleged disagreements with how the Trump admin handles LGBTQ rights, the leader for Gays for Trump remains adamant and hopeful about his support for the US President. His statement has since gone viral online.
Peter Boykin from North Carolina, also known as the founder and President of the Gays for Trump organization, recently sat down for an interview/podcast with Uncloseted Media and LGBTQ Nation. In the video, which was uploaded on May 6, Boykin discusses the specifics of his support for Trump and why he also founded his group. Additionally, despite Trump’s declining approval rating, Boykin also explained why he keeps supporting the President.
“I’m hopeful for Donald Trump, as Donald Trump. I’m still wary of a lot of the Republicans and some of the people in his cabinet. Not the gay members per se, but the other people like Hegseth and other individuals that I’m not really satisfied with,” claims Boykin. The host, however, pointed out that the Trump administration “slashed HIV and AIDS funding and funding for many other LGBTQ healthcare issues” and also “erased mentions of transgender people.”
To this, Boykin explained that, “So I’m not optimistic on the future of the Republican party, I’m only going to be optimistic about what Donald Trump’s doing that’s not regarding the gay community.” The Gays for Trump founder further clarified that his support for Trump doesn’t extend to Trump’s cabinet members, as he particularly didn’t like Pete Hegseth and Hegseth’s policies for LGBTQ members.
People online have called out Gays for Trump
Boykin’s interview has since gone viral, particularly on Reddit, where many commenters dissected the Gays for Trump president’s views. Some also brought up some interesting analogies and recalled how, back in WW2, a group of Jews also supported Germany. “During the early years of [WW2] Germany there was actually an organized group of Jews who supported [a certain fascist]. When [the fascist] consolidated total power the group was outlawed and its members were imprisoned or sent to concentration camps.”
Meanwhile, others have wondered what the dynamics were between him and President Trump, assuming they’ve met, with one commenter saying, “You know EXACTLY what trump calls him the second he leaves the room. You know the exact word.” Hence, another commenter couldn’t help but give off a rant, “[Expletive] masochistic clowns. Basically chickens for mcnuggts.”
Apart from Gays for Trump, the topic of LGBTQ conservatives also gained attention during the 2024 Republican National Convention after Grindr reportedly experienced outages in Milwaukee, fueling online speculation about app usage– presumably from thousands of Republicans around the event.
