Yellowstone actor Kevin Costner’s wife Christine Baumgartner has filed for divorce after eighteen years of marriage. The petition to dissolve their marriage was filed on Monday, May 1, with each party intent on fighting for custody of their children.
While the couple did not expressly state the nature of their fallout, Kevin’s wife cited irreconcilable differences in her filing per TMZ. She also requested joint custody of their three children Cayden, Hayes, and Grace. However, she did not demand spousal support, as the estranged couple had a prenuptial agreement prior to their marriage.
On Tuesday, hours after Christine filed for divorce, Kevin responded with a petition of his own, also seeking joint custody of the kids.
What Drove Kevin Costner and his Wife Christine Baumgartner to Divorce
Following the divorce filing, a representative of Kevin Costner confirmed the news to news outlets. In a statement, the representative explained why the Yellowstone star consented to dissolve his marriage, saying:
“It is with great sadness that circumstances beyond his control have transpired which have resulted in Mr. Costner having to participate in a dissolution of marriage action. We ask that his, Christine’s, and their children’s privacy be respected as they navigate this difficult time.”
Prior to the divorce filing, Kevin Costner and his wife showed no signs of marital woes. In fact, months prior, Kevin gushed about his wife and her contribution to his life in an interview. At the time, he credited her ability to make their marriage and home a warmer, prettier place to “the power of love.”
The two tied the knot in September 2004, and have until now, maintained a scandal-fee marriage, while building a family. In addition to their three kids together, Kevin is also a dad to three children from his previous relationship.
The divorce comes amid speculations that the Yellowstone star may bid farewell to the series after five seasons. His rumored exit reportedly resulted from a spat between him and show creator Taylor Sheridan. However, production sources are hopeful the duo could resolve whatever bad blood they had in a way that wouldn’t result in Kevin’s ousting or an overall end to the show.
