Despite being a squad-based shooter like Ready or Not, Helldivers 2 feels much more like Starship Troopers, thanks to the Chargers and other alien bugs. Death is only one clumsy accident away, and you’ll often need to sacrifice glory on the battlefield to save your life. Chargers can be a tough enemy for new players, but a little knowledge and planning go a long way. You might as well get used to squashing these giant bugs now because they’re not going anywhere. Here’s how to find the location of Chargers and kill them in Helldivers 2.

The Strain Culling Order in Helldivers 2 tasks you with killing three chargers, which means you’ll have to identify their location first. For better or worse, these alien battering rams don’t spawn on the game’s lowest difficulties, so you’ll need to unlock Medium difficult before you find any. Once you start playing Medium-difficulty missions, you’ll start seeing Chargers introduced to the regular pool of enemies. Though you’ll typically only confront one at a time, some of the game’s funniest (and deadliest) moments occur when a pack of them pounce upon your squad.

How To Kill Chargers

Chargers behave a bit like rhinos which should already tell you a thing or two about how to fight them. If you want to kill Chargers in Helldivers 2, avoid shooting them in the head or sides. Those heavily-armored spots will deflect your bullets with ease. The only two vulnerable parts of a Charger’s body are its rear and underside, so focus your fire there. Chargers aren’t good at splitting their attention, so have one of your squadmates act as bait and draw aggro while the rest of you attack.

Extra Padding won’t do much good against these bugs, so you’ll want to keep your distance and dodge to stay alive. Rifles and machine guns both work well for killing Chargers. That said, the easiest method for new players is probably using Stratagems. Orbital Strikes are a handy way to deal with them, but even light weapons can get the job done once you know what you’re doing. To summarize, here’s how to find and kill Chargers in Helldivers 2:

  • Play on Medium difficulty or higher
  • Shoot their rear and undersides
  • Use a teammate as bait
  • Use Stratagems and heavy weapons

Helldivers 2 is available for PC and PlayStation 5.
