Most of the time, the OpenGL error 1282 in Minecraft is just a spam message that can be easily fixed by turning off a feature in the game’s menu. Nevertheless, this issue can also result in the screen going completely black. There are several different solutions that can fix the OpenGL error 1282 (Invalid operation) problems, and this Minecraft guide will list all of them.
1. Turn Off Show GL Errors Notification
(Updated on September 30, 2024 – updated links and format)
Sometimes, the OpenGL error 1282 (Invalid operation) notifications will keep showing up, but you can play the game just fine. When that happens, simply turn off the Show GL Errors option:
- Start up Minecraft.
- Open the Options menu in the main menu.
- If you’re already inside a World, open the game menu using the Escape key.
- Select Video Settings.
- Select the Others menu.
- Look for the Show GL Errors option and turn it off.
- Choose Done.
2. Temporarily Disable Advanced OpenGL in Minecraft
OpenGL API is used for rendering 2D and 3D vector graphics and can help give you the best gaming visual performance, but it might conflict with specific drivers and cause errors. Try disabling the Advanced OpenGL feature to see if it fixes any problem you encounter:
- Start up Minecraft.
- Open the Options menu in the main menu.
- If you’re already inside a World, open the game menu using the Escape key.
- Select Video Settings.
- Look for the Advanced OpenGL option and turn it off.
- Choose Done.
3. Disable Mods and Shaders
While using mods and shaders can improve your gaming experiences, however having them is also more likely to expose you to problems since mods tweak and alter the original game files — that’s why they’re called modifications in the first place, after all.
Now, to make sure that your mods and shaders are not actually the culprit behind the OpenGL error 1282 in your Minecraft save, you will have to temporarily disable them. Here’s how:
Disable Mods:
- Close Minecraft if it’s running.
- Open the Windows Start menu.
- Type run to open the Run app.
- Now type %AppData% and press Enter.
- Pick the .minecraft folder.
- Open the mods folder.
- Delete the mod folders.
- Back up the mods by copying the folder to other locations first.
- You can uninstall all the mods at once by deleting the mods folder itself.
- However, for proper troubleshooting, you might want to delete each mod one by one to see which one is causing the OpenGL 1282 Error.
- Now open your Minecraft again and see if the error still persists.
Disable Shaders:
- Close Minecraft if it’s running.
- Open the Windows Start menu.
- Type run to open the Run app.
- Now type %AppData% and press Enter.
- Pick the .minecraft folder.
- Open the resourcepacks folder.
- Open the shaderpacks folder.
- Delete the shader folders.
- Back up the shaders by copying the folder to other locations first.
- You can uninstall all the shaders at once by deleting the shaderpacks folder itself.
- However, for proper troubleshooting, you might want to delete each shader one by one to see which one is causing the OpenGL 1282 Error.
- Now open your Minecraft again and see if the error still persists.
4. Update Java
For people playing Minecraft: Java Edition, it’s crucial to keep Java on your computer up-to-date. Simply visit the official Java site and download the latest version.
5. Update Your Graphic Card Driver
Your GPU and OpenGL run in tandem in order to support Minecraft. And the OpenGL firmware is automatically updated when you update your graphics drivers. With that in mind, updating your GPU driver might fix OpenGL error 1282 in Minecraft.
If you use Nvidia cards, you can install the latest drivers by downloading them through the GeForce Experience app or the Nvidia site. Meanwhile, AMD users would want to download their drivers from AMD.com. You can also manually update your driver by:
- Open the Windows Start menu.
- Search for Device Manager.
- Search for Display adapters.
- Right-click on your GPU’s name.
- Select Update driver.
- Wait until it finishes, then restart your PC.
6. Update Optifine (for Mod Users)
Optifine is a third-party mod to optimize Minecraft‘s performance. However, if you have an outdated version of the mod, it might end up causing an error instead. Visit the Optifine website and download the latest version to update it.
7. Reinstall Minecraft
Unfortunately, if nothing works, your last alternative is to reinstall Minecraft to make sure the game files themselves are not corrupted. Before uninstalling though, you should always make a backup of your saves and other important files like screenshots, resource packs, and mods first. Simply open your Minecraft folder and copy the necessary folders, and replace them after you have finished the reinstallation process.
