A Washington artist has drawn widespread attention after painting a dramatic image of Mark Zuckerberg’s yacht engulfed in flames while the vessel was docked in Seattle. The artwork quickly spread across social media, turning the local artist into an unexpected online sensation and sparking discussion about wealth, art, and public protest.

The painting gained traction after photos of artist Ryan Hill working on the piece were shared online. Interest grew further when Hill posted an “Ask Me Anything” thread on Reddit, where he identified himself as the artist behind the painting. The post attracted thousands of comments and more than 11,000 upvotes as people discussed both the artwork and the message behind it.

The piece, titled Last Emissions of the Launchpad, depicts Zuckerberg’s massive yacht consumed by flames while sitting in Seattle’s Lake Union area. The Washington artist decided to create the painting after learning that the Meta CEO’s yacht had docked in his neighborhood. He described the work as an expression of what he believed was a sentiment shared by many members of the local community.

The Washington artist said he painted the artwork on location near the yacht, setting up his easel within view of the vessel. He later explained that he drew inspiration from painter Alex Schaefer, whose works depicting bank buildings on fire gained attention following the 2008 financial crisis.

As the painting circulated online, Hill said he was surprised by the amount of attention it received. In his Reddit post, he thanked supporters and said the response reinforced why he enjoys creating public art. He also revealed that he was considering donating proceeds from any future sale of the painting to organizations that support immigrants in Washington state.

The Washington artist said he did not encounter any hostility while working on the piece. According to Hill, most people simply gave him space to paint, and no one affiliated with the yacht approached him during the process. He also noted that the location was a busy public walkway, allowing passersby to watch as he completed the work.

Users Applaud Washington Artist’s Yacht Painting

Reaction online was overwhelmingly positive, with many commenters praising both the painting’s quality and its message. Several users jokingly described Hill as a Seattle hero, while others said the artwork belonged in a museum. “You’re a national treasure,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “Do you sell prints? I’d love this framed on my wall.”

Many commenters suggested auctioning the original artwork and donating the proceeds to charity. Some users even proposed turning the image into posters, calendars, or other fundraising items. “Auction this bad boy off for a good cause,” one commenter suggested.

Others focused on the symbolism of the painting, viewing it as a commentary on billionaire wealth and economic inequality. Several commenters compared Hill’s work to famous protest art and praised him for creating the piece in public rather than digitally. Some even suggested future paintings featuring other prominent billionaires and their assets.

For now, the Washington artist says he plans to continue creating art and is considering additional works in a similar style as attention surrounding the painting continues to grow.
