Some people may not know it, but today is the birthday of former US President Barack Obama. While some are celebrating in their own way, it seems that those in Chicago, Illinois, are talking about this in a bigger way, given how some claim Obama still has a house somewhere in the city. Yet, this celebration became a discussion among Chicago locals, as some are praising the former President for what he did in the country, while others are furious at those wishing happy birthday to Obama.
One Reddit user who goes by the name of ansyhrrian decided to share a screenshot of Michelle Obama’s Instagram account, where she celebrates the 65th birthday of the former President. The user said the reason they shared this on the Chicago subreddit was that Obama apparently has a house in Illinois, more specifically, on the South Side of Chicago.
While the majority of people started praising Obama, it seems this seemingly innocent post sparked a debate, as some people started complaining about him, judging those who are celebrating Obama’s birthday, turning the whole thread into a debate of sorts.
On the one hand, there were several people wishing Obama a happy birthday, saying that they miss some of the things he did while President, mainly talking about his behavior in public, which many think Trump should learn from. Yet others think that people should not idolize Obama, as he’s now out of office.
Illinois Residents Fight Over Obama’s Birthday
Since the comment became a bit of a war zone, people went to opposite sides to show their support or disdain for the former President.
“For all his failures, he is undoubtedly the best President I have ever voted for.“
“Don’t worship politicians.“
Others even threw Trump into the mix, saying that Obama had decency when he was in office, which is something that the current administration seems to be lacking.
“Definitely not perfect, but man, do I miss the presidency having the dignity it had when he was in office.“
“They have always been a very nice, no-drama couple, and that is so rare these days in politics.“
Like any other political topic in the country, people will always have sides, but it seems the majority of those in Illinois miss simpler times when there wasn’t a lot of controversy surrounding the President. Still, there are those who prefer the one we have right now, so, as people say, to each their own.
