A woman in Portland, Oregon, recently took to TikTok to vent about what she described as the demonization of fatness in society. In the now-viral video, she passionately argued that the system does not truly care about fat people, despite claims suggesting otherwise. She began by insisting that if people genuinely cared, they would take the time to educate themselves on the issue rather than judge others based solely on appearance.
“Because if you really cared, you would do your research. You would learn about fat phobia, learn about colonization, learn about the history of why fatness is demonized in our culture,” she said passionately during the rant. The woman further argued that although she is fat, she refuses to shrink herself or live timidly because of society’s standards. She boldly claimed that people cannot accurately determine someone’s health simply by looking at their body size and maintained that she is healthier than many might assume.
Netizens Disapprove Of Fatphobia Rant
Social media users quickly flooded the comment section with mixed responses, and many strongly disagreed with her perspective. “She thinks she is fighting the system, but all she is doing is making soda pop companies and big pharma rich. Waiting for the ozempic arc,” one commenter wrote. Others were particularly confused by her reference to colonization and questioned how it connected to the discussion about obesity and body image. Several users asked her to explain the point further, especially since she is a White woman.
One viewer also reflected on how the video affected them politically, writing, “I‘m a leftist, but I had some Republican thoughts watching this. This person is why people, myself included, can’t stand us.”
Some commenters admitted they struggled to follow her overall message, arguing that the speech lacked clarity and coherence. However, not everyone shared the same criticism. A number of users pointed out that they did not even view her as obese, describing her instead as someone with a healthy amount of body fat. Others felt she may simply have been having a difficult day and urged people online to respond with more kindness rather than cruelty. One user even used the discussion to question why conversations surrounding body image and societal expectations often seem to come more from women than men.
“Going against the grain here, and I weigh 109: her delivery is wild, but she’s really not wrong. There is so much false information about BMIs, obesity, and what the actual toll on society is, and it has made all of us have an anti-fat bias, whether we are aware or not,” another netizen argued while defending parts of her message. Toward the end of the discussion, one commenter attempted to bring balance to the heated debate, stating that while people are not responsible for researching another person’s health condition, they also should not make it their duty to judge how others choose to live.
In the end, the viral conversation served as yet another reminder of how deeply divided opinions surrounding body image, health, and societal standards continue to be online.
