When a game has online multiplayer, most players expect there to be some sort of crossplay or cross-platform feature. These features make it so that no matter what platform you’re playing a game on, you’ll be able to play online with a friend who has it on a different platform. Cross-platform titles have become more popular, which leads to players going out and seeking whether or not games have them before even purchasing them. It’s the same question fans of Risk of Rain are asking for Risk of Rain Returns. Can you fight the Lemurians with your friends on the Switch if you have the game on PC?
Does Risk of Rain Returns Have Crossplay?
Unfortunately, Risk of Rain Returns is not cross-platform and does not have crossplay. When you’re in the main menu and select to start an online co-op session, you’ll only see players who are on the same platform as you, whether that be on the Switch or on Steam. As for crossplay, you won’t be able to boot up your saved data if you are a PC player and decide to pick up the game on Switch in order to play with friends.
Fortunately, there is a local co-op, meaning that as long as there are enough controllers on PC, up to four players in the same room can all play together. If everyone has a copy of the game on their Switch, then as long as Local Communication is selected, wireless play can occur where everyone joins the lobby from their own consoles while playing in the same room. When you’re done, you can just drop out and let everyone else have fun.
Risk of Rain Returns is available on PC and Switch.
