A man who runs a lawn care business in Wichita, Kansas, came across an elderly woman whose yard was in total disarray. She explained that a tree service had scammed her, taking her deposit without doing anything to her yard. Tragically, this occurred while she was grieving her recently deceased husband. With her story shared online, the internet did its thing, managing to potentially change her life.

Spencer, who runs SB Mowing, shared the interaction and subsequent lawn care work on the yard belonging to Debbie, the aforementioned elderly woman. His content revolves around these sorts of stories and lawn work, and he has often gone viral, amassing 16 million followers on TikTok alone. The clip attached above wasn’t the exception, garnering 12.7 million views, 1.7 million likes, and more than 35,100 comments in just over a day.

The Kansas man met Debbie, who immediately told him she had “a mess.” She was, of course, referring to her yard, which had years of overgrowth. However, the woman explained her situation to Spencer, saying that multiple people had taken advantage of her.

First off, a “tree service” she hired took her $2,000 down deposit and ran away, never to show up, giving her nothing but excuses. During this time, Debbie was grieving her husband, who had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and sadly passed away 90 days later, before the tree service scam.

“Oh, wow. I’m really sorry to hear that,” Spencer said. “Can I give you a hug?“

The woman agreed, and both embraced in a much-needed gesture of kindness. Spencer then offered to purchase all of the items in her yard that she was planning on getting rid of during a yard sale. The woman, crying, thanked him.

Heartbreaking Story

The clip then showed a montage of all the work Spencer and his father did on the woman’s yard, which lasted two whole days. He then explained that he learned about Debbie’s situation thanks to an Uber driver who learned about what she was going through.

The Kansas man then added that, on top of the grieving and the tree service scam, the woman’s vehicle had also been damaged by a neighbor. That neighbor never paid her for it. Money-wise, Debbie fell three months behind on rent, had to postpone dental and other healthcare, and went days without food.

Spencer then showed the result to his audience, but most importantly, to Debbie, who was moved beyond measure. He also gave her $800 for the yard items he donated, and even told her he would pay for the three months of rent she owed. The woman, of course, was extremely grateful.

“I’ve tried to hang in there myself, and it isn’t easy. And I’ve tried to be strong, and it just came to the limit that I was giving up hope. So I appreciate everything you’ve done,” she said.

However, that was still not all. Spencer set up a GoFundMe to help Debbie out. As of the writing of this article, it has raised a whopping $481,633, all in just over a day. In a follow-up clip, Spencer delivered the news, and, again, Debbie was moved to tears.

Reactions

Some viewers were straight-up angry at the ones who took advantage of Debby. One said, “Taking advantage of the elderly is nasty work. I hope that the other company gets what they deserve.” Another one commented, “Now we want to know who took this poor lady’s money and get this back. Internet needs to do their thing.”

Others, however, were just moved by her story and Spencer’s generosity. One commented, “You should probably reupload this, the video’s all blurry.” Another one added, “Oh, Debbie, you deserve every bit of this and more.”

Thanks to the internet’s generosity and Spencer’s willingness to help her, she will most likely have a break to properly mourn her husband and take care of her health.
