Fans are a bit nervous about a Tezuka/Disney combination, but hear me out.

If you’re looking for the next cool anime to check out this year, you won’t have to wait long! Assassin manga The Fable is getting a Spring 2024 anime release on Disney Plus with a pretty exciting studio behind it. The Fable comes from the publication that was once home to Akira (yes, that one), and has sold copies in the tens of millions, so don’t miss out!

What is The Fable Anime Release Date on Disney Plus?

The Fable is set for an April 6, 2024, anime release, broadcasting in Japan on Nippon TV, then Disney Plus. Much like most anime, the streaming release will closely follow the original broadcast. This developing story will be updated with release time specifics. The series will run for two cours, meaning likely 24 episodes like Jujutsu Kaisen, Solo Leveling, or The Apothecary Diaries.

This is the latest development in a recent push by the streaming service to feature more anime in its catalog. While international viewers could already enjoy Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War on Disney Plus, other hits recently joined worldwide. Sailor Moon, Attack on Titan, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and soon the acclaimed The Fable will be available on the service.

What Studio is Animating The Fable?

Tezuka Productions has been tapped to produce the anime release for The Fable, and with their studio, they’re certainly capable. With iconic hits such as Astro Boy, Black Jack, and Dororo under their belt, there’s reason to be excited.

The Fable feels especially fitting in light of them having previously worked on an OVA for Golgo 13, the oldest running hitman manga, and longest-running manga in history. Seriously, on top of reading up on The Fable, try getting lost in 211 volumes of Golgo 13. Tezuka Productions also recently had a well-received adaptation of Pluto hit Netflix last year. However, fans are cautious about The Fable, another massive hit, and how things could turn out.

What is The Fable Anime?

The Fable is about Akira Saitou, an ordinary-seeming protagonist whose lethal talents earned him the eponymous nickname. As “The Fable” has carved out a legend for himself, he suddenly finds this is put to the test when his next mission forces him not to do any contract killing for a year. This creates a new form of tension for him in the series, especially with danger potentially always around.

It’s also worth noting that this is a Kodansha manga adaptation, something of an indicator of critical greatness. It was published in Weekly Young Magazine, home of Initial D, MF Ghost, Ghost in the Shell, and many more.

Fans dread the news of a Disney-localized release of a beloved Seinen classic, more mature than typical Disney offerings. However, it should be stressed that Disney only localizes the series, and it’s being originally produced for TV. Regardless of feelings about Tezuka Productions, we shall have to wait and see the final product.

Besides, if they’re worried about an extra-sanitized production, Disney Plus localized The Bear internationally. That’s right, Best Comedy Series Emmy winner The Bear, f-bombs and all, is on Disney Plus, and I enjoyed watching every second. The Fable won’t even be the first to push the ‘mature’ envelope for the famously family-friendly studio. So expect to see some of the Nighthawk soon!
