A planned trip to New York to meet his girlfriend’s grandparents turned into an unexpected family dispute after one man claimed her parents insisted he stay in their home, but refused to give him a bed.
According to Reddit user Final-Toe-9117, his girlfriend’s parents told him he couldn’t share a room with her because of their religious beliefs. Instead, they expected him to sleep on the floor and, according to him, also insisted he not book a hotel room.
As to why he couldn’t just sleep on a couch in the house, the one at Final-Toe-9117’s grandparents-in-law’s place is a “prized possession” and off limits to him. He turned to Reddit with a simple question: “Am I overreacting for wanting the bare minimum of a bed to sleep in?”
Among the hundreds who commented on the boyfriend’s post, many said they couldn’t believe he was being ‘set up’ to be treated like that. “Bro, for real? Sleep on the floor like a dog??? Have a little self-respect, stand your ground, or stay at home,” read a top comment. “Even dogs get a bed,” added a reply.
Countless others chimed in with similar responses to Final-Toe-9117’s predicament. “Stay in a hotel. Their arrangement is rude and ridiculous,” wrote a user. “They are disrespectful, hypocritical, condescending, ridiculous,” harshly remarked another, adding how the parents’ “religious beliefs” bit is likely a test to see how they can get the boyfriend to follow their orders.
For additional context, Final-Toe-9117 said he had previously treated his girlfriend’s family to a trip to the Bahamas without asking them to contribute toward gas, food, or other expenses. That history made the sleeping arrangement feel even more disrespectful to him, although he said he still loves his girlfriend despite the ongoing issues with her family.
Reddit Says the Real Issue With New York Visit Was Boundaries
After reading hundreds of replies, the Redditor said he’d decided to book a hotel anyway, regardless of whether his girlfriend’s parents approved. For many commenters, the debate was no longer about where he would sleep, but whether he should allow his girlfriend’s family to dictate the terms of his visit.
