It’s been four years since the culmination of the Mass Effect trilogy, four years since the disappointing ending, four years of wondering what is next. Mass Effect Andromeda’s first trailer released earlier today, rekindling a blaze thought long dead in many N7 devotees.

The trailer is the epitome of space opera, including many of the races we love (Krogan, Asari, Salarian) and introducing an extensive amount of new races. While the thresher mall like a metallic monster that can be seen in the trailer is awesome, the standout revolves around the probable antagonists of the game.
Seen with a halo-shaped horned cresting above its head, the unknown alien can be seen walking up to Ryder intimidatingly and grabbing them by the throat stating, “Now I know what makes you, special.” Though it is interesting to note that early in the trailer, the protagonist can be heard saying we’re the aliens, indicating the hostility showed maybe in self-defense, or maybe it’s how halo horns race says hi.
While the cause conflict is still a mystery, the atmosphere of the trailer manages to simultaneously evoke a sense of intrigue, wonder, and despair reminiscent of the series debut. It speaks volumes that the trailer is able to elicit these same emotions, especially considering the widely criticized ending and the fact that it’s not an entirely new concept – with movies, books and games having explored space and its culture before – just a new universe.
Andromeda takes place 600 years from the events of the previous, but will not directly tie into the events of its predecessor, as Ryder and his/her crew left the Milky Way galaxy before the reaper war. If the first trailer is any indication of things to come, then Bioware has got my preorder for sure, as Mass Effect: Andromeda release spring 2017.
