Variety reports that the second season of Squid Game has been officially confirmed by Netflix. While discussing Netflix’s views and earnings for the fourth quarter of 2021, Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos announced that we can expect another season of Squid Game. During the interview, Netflix declared Squid Game their “biggest series ever.” According to IMDB, in the first 28 days after its September 17th premiere, it pulled over 111 million viewers, taking the title of Netflix’s most-watched original series from Bridgerton.

The first season of Squid Game was a hit TV series 10 years in the making. The Netflix original series took the world by storm with its gripping tale and brutal action sequences. The Korean action drama was a huge success that had an almost immediate impact on pop culture. The most notable reference is the infamous schoolyard scene of red light green light which appeared everywhere from Instagram reels, viral Tik Tok videos, online platform games like Roblox and Fortnite to Saturday Night Live. Squid Game was written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk and stars Lee Jung-Jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-Joon, and Oh Yeong-su, the first Korean actor to win a Golden Globe award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role on Television.

Back in November, during a red carpet interview with The Associated Press series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk hinted that there would be a season two in development, although at the time of the interview, it was still in the idea phase. He says, “So there’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice”.

Squid Game season two will be one of over twenty original Korean titles coming to Netflix this year. It will join titles like All of Us Are Dead, Twenty Five Twenty One, and Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area, a South Korean remake of the Spanish crime drama Money Heist. Ted Sarandos assures us that “The Squid Game universe has just begun .” We can’t wait to see what fate has in store for protagonist Seong Gi-Hun.
