The Netflix real-life depiction of the Korean drama Squid Game imbibed a similar element of danger as the original, leaving several contestants seeking medical aid. Sources reported that the streaming giant has been secretly filming the reality TV version of the original series, with 456 players gunning for the grand prize.
Per The Sun, players have been subjected to extreme conditions, including freezing temperatures up to -3°C in the UK studios. Yet, many of the contestants in the Netflix real-life Squid Game failed to back down. This is mostly due to the prize money of £3.7 million, the biggest ever offered in a reality competition show. One contestant disclosed:
“Even if hypothermia kicked in, then people were willing to stay for as long as possible because a lot of money was on the line. Too many were determined not to move, so they stood there for far too long.”
Netflix Real-Life Squid Game Is Almost As Deadly
Despite the determination the players mustered with their eyes on the prize money, hundreds have suffered elimination already. In the first game alone, themed “Red Light, Green light,” like the original series, hundreds of players ended up eliminated.
The remaining take shelter in the UK Studios, sleeping on bunk beds like the real series. One player confirmed to the outlet that many entered the show feeling optimistic that they would become millionaires. However, most of these contestants left the Netflix competition show in tears.
The insider went on to admit that the extremities of the competition, resulted in real danger for most of the contestants, saying:
“You could hear someone yell “medic” and the crew would rush on. We ended up standing there for 30 minutes between takes. Some were crawling by the end. At least one was carried out on a stretcher.”
Last year, Netflix announced the introduction of a real-life Squid Game competition show, mirroring the original Korean drama directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk. Teasing the upcoming show, Netflix’s vice president of unscripted and documentary series Brandon Riegg promised a fascinating and unpredictable journey. Given these latest insider revelations about the progress, viewers can’t expect less.
