Someone had, indeed, said something to her.

In a heartbreaking video recorded by a New York mother, a young girl is heard saying she no longer wanted to be Black, but White instead. When asked why, the girl just broke down in tears, embracing her mother. The internet attempted to theorize why the girl would want such a thing, and some even believed recording and posting the moment was unnecessary.

I chose to share this moment because it reflects a deeper conversation that many families quietly face. As a mother raising three girls, this is the first time I’ve encountered something like this, and hearing it from my 5-year-old truly stopped me in my tracks. Despite believing that I built her up to be strong and to love herself and who she is, I stand here feeling stuck and saddened, questioning where I may have gone wrong. Children begin forming ideas about identity, beauty, and belonging at a very young age, often influenced by what they see, hear, and experience around them. This is not about judgment, but about awareness, guidance, and teaching our children to value who they are. As parents, we have a responsibility to listen, understand, and intentionally build their confidence, identity, and self-worth. #black #raisingkids #awareness #fyp #parenting

The mother, known as NubianPrincess18, shared the moment on TikTok. She usually shares lifestyle and family-related content, but the clip in question stood out due to its virality. It garnered 795,200 views, 116,800 likes, and close to 10,000 comments.

The New York woman began recording her young daughter as she explained why she wanted to be White. The girl explained, “‘Cause I don’t wanna be Black.” Her mother told her that being Black was beautiful, and that she was a beautiful girl, something she often tells her.

“Why would you wanna be White? God made you the way you are for a reason,” the mother continued.

She asked the question once again. As she did, the girl’s face started to morph, with the sadness growing in her eyes. The New York daughter eventually walked toward her mother and hugged her, crying.

“What’s making you sad right now?” the mother asked, as her other daughter joined in and accompanied her sister.

Turns out, something had happened. In a follow-up clip, the mother explained that a child on her bus didn’t want to be her friend. According to her, it was because “of the color of her skin.” She has since reached out to the school and the bus driver, and currently, the situation “is being addressed.”

Mixed Reactions Over Heartbreaking Moment

The heartbreaking clip sparked multiple responses.

Some, without knowing the proper context, correctly theorized that the girl’s desire to be White stemmed from an incident. One viewer commented, “Someone said something to her.” Another one wrote, “The kids at school most definitely!“

Other viewers, however, believed that the mother shouldn’t have shared such a delicate moment online. One user said, “Sorry, but this is a private moment.” Another one asked, “How about putting the phone down?“

Even though the moment was indeed very intimate, the New York mother decided to share it online because she believes what her daughter felt was not uncommon. And while there were some negative comments, she now feels grateful for the support she received online.
