After two weeks of dealing with a broken elevator in their apartment, a disgruntled tenant in Utah claims management compensated them with a Rice Krispies Treat. “$2400/mo rent btw,” Reddit user Magical18 grumbled on r/mildlyinfuriating, sharing their disdain for the landlord in the comment section. Hundreds of other Redditors shared in their frustration, agreeing that a whimsical message with puns and a snack probably isn’t enough to address important broken utilities.
One commenter argued that Magical18 should be thankful that they got anything at all, to which the tenant replied, “Be thankful I got anything? A 30¢ Rice Krispies treat is something?” They also sarcastically remarked that 2026 is definitely not an ideal year for their apartment situation, given the $2.4K rent and management’s lack of priority for elevator repairs.
The Majority of Users Agreed That This Snack Compensation Is Unfair and Unacceptable
One highly upvoted commenter was shocked at how little this Utah apartment’s landlord allegedly cares for their renters. “When that happened in my building they took $300 off everyone’s rent,” the user recalled. Another person added how handing out free snacks would have been acceptable on Day 2, but for a two-week wait to be rewarded with a funny note and a cheap treat is something only out of “pro-rate rent territory.”
A third Redditor pointed out how this Rice Krispies handout is “just going to make everyone in the building angrier at them.” A fourth commenter chimed in, exclaiming how every tenant should be demanding rent credit. “If it’s in the lease, it’s diminished value since you’re paying for its maintenance. If it’s a multi-story building and extended period of time, it becomes an FHA violation,” they explained.
As another user adds, a lack of an elevator for tenants with disabilities will be a huge problem, not to mention those living on higher floors, depending on how many floors the apartment building has.
At the very least, as one person jokes, the treat will give tenants “carbs for the trek up [the] stairs,” though OP and others living in the apartment likely find that comment less funny.
