Prince William opted to steer clear of his younger brother Prince Harry‘s legal battle over his UK security. The Prince of Wales has been at loggerheads with his younger brother for years. Their public scuffle escalated after Harry and his wife Meghan Markle decided to turn their backs on the royal family and begin a new life in the UK. Further worsening the rift, Harry and Meghan made claims about some “racist” members of the royal family worrying their son Archie may turn out dark-skinned, during their explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey. The royal racist claims drove a wedge between Harry and his family, most especially Prince William who felt fingers may inevitably point at his wife Kate Midleton.
This past year offered the royals an opportunity to heal their rift as two senior family members Kate and King Charles battled their respective health conditions. However, save for Prince Harry’s brief trip to the UK after his dad’s diagnosis went public, and a note of well-wishes to William’s wife, the dark familial dysfunction remained pretty much the same. Royal experts believe the main issue rests not in the Sussexes’ royal step back and unhinged attack on the royal family but in Prince Harry’s quest to restore his UK police security.
The Monarchy Ignores Harry’s Security Woes
The 40-year-old had his tax payers-funded police security revoked following his royal step back. Since then Prince Harry has been engulfed in a legal battle with the Home Office, to restore his security detail. Despite losing the case initially, he won the bid to appeal the court’s decision, further prolonging the legal squabble. In all of these, neither Prince William nor King Charles has openly intervened despite the belief that their say could greatly influence the outcome of Harry’s security dilemma.
Royal insiders have debunked claims that the monarch could help reinstate his younger son’s UK police security if he so desired. However, Prince Harry reportedly believes his dad holds such power and continues to heckle him to intervene, forcing the monarch to avoid his calls. Harry alluded to this in his 2023 memoir, Spare, claiming he could not reach his dad because he would not take his calls during what he described as “the ultimate nightmare,” per The Mirror.
Prince William’s Reaction to Harry’s Security Demands
Prince Harry also admitted to reaching out to his brother William about his security concerns after the press exposed his family’s location to the world, leaving them vulnerable to high levels of threat. He claimed Prince William also opted to do nothing, simply saying,
“It was a government decision. Nothing can be done.”
In his book, Prince Harry also claimed that the head of his police security team informed him that the threat level against him and his wife Meghan Markle, and their son, was on par with the Queen, surpassing that of any other royal, per The Mirror. This compounding drama has made a royal reconciliation increasingly difficult for all parties involved.
The Times‘ assistant editor Kate Mansey pointed out that Harry’s decision to sue the King’s government was “the sticking point.” According to her, the royals were well aware of Ravec’s decision to remove Harry’s UK security, as the royal household had a representative in the deciding committee. Hence, the decision was most likely made with the royal family’s consent, making it apparent that Harry’s bid to have his family intervene in his favor could amount to naught.
