Since the announcement of Project L in 2019, Riot Games has slowly been drip-feeding us more information about the highly anticipated fighting title.
We’ve gotten glimpses of gameplay, and snippets of plans from the development team, but that’s about it. But that might be about to change soon as Riot Games announced more details about Project L, as well as hinted towards more information coming in the near future.
In an official video from Riot Games, Tom Cannon talked about how far the game has come in terms of development, and also mentioned how scary it was to show the gameplay video from last year. He also discussed how relieved he was when it came to the reception of that video.
The reactions of fans reassured the team at Riot Games that they were heading in the right direction. As speculated previously he also announced that, like League of Legends, Project L will be a free-to-play game.
How Will Project L Play
Project L will function as an assist-based fighter, and will have two champions per team. This means that one character will be playable at one time, while the other may be used to “assist” the other mid-match.
The team has finished work on core mechanics, what they are is still uncertain, but from what we’ve seen so far, there might not be too much new to add. What seems most likely, is that all characters will have individual mechanics that will differentiate them from the cast.
What the Team is Doing Now
Riot Games is now focusing on the social and eSports aspect of the game, as well as polishing up each character.
The team is comprised of industry veterans, and Tom promised that they will only make what they like, and monetize the game while respecting the players. So no pay-to-win mechanics hopefully.
The trailer also showed off a brand new fighter, Illoi. Illoi is a priestess and has the ability to pull an opponent’s soul from them using the powers given to her by her god.
Tom closed out by sharing the blog post that has more details on what approach they’re taking when it comes to developing the game. He finally mentioned that he will be back once more this year for another update, confirming that the game will not be making it this year. But hopefully, whenever Project L comes out, it will have the level of quality that the fighting game community enjoys.
