Some films get stuck in development hell, but sometimes the needle starts to move. Blumhouse’s Spawn movie found new writers with the people who penned Joker and the writer for Captain America 4, subtitled New World Order. Scott Silver, best known for Joker and The Fighter, will start on the script with Malcolm Spellman, who resumes his Marvel work after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier with the next standalone film for the shield-wielding hero. Matt Mixon (Yesterday Was Everything) is a new player in the screenwriting scene who will join the scribes. This update on the upcoming film was reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Todd McFarlane, the creator of many DC and Marvel comics, specifically Spawn, was to direct the movie. He wrote an early draft, but it is looking like he will step back from the director’s chair with the new writing team on board who have made major marks on the superhero genre. Jamie Foxx is still set to play the titular character.

Gaining such high-profile talent for the Spawn movie has shifted McFarlane’s bar on what the film could be. As he said to The Hollywood Reporter, said, “Let’s keep the momentum going” when it comes to setting his sights on obtaining an “A-list” director and cinematographer. Although, he did not name anyone that he would want to fill those un-filled roles.
Not much is known about what the plans are for the Spawn movie. For years, McFarlane has spoken concepts and the tone he aims for as he wants this to be a “dead serious scary movie” that will be a hard R-rating. As the MCU dives into some horror and the superhero genre, in general, finds new spaces to explore, from comedies like Ant-Man and Thor: Love and Thunder to a musical with 2024’s Joker: Folie à Deux.
