Unlike Copper Ore or Scrap Iron in Valheim, Black Metal Scrap can only be refined inside the oven of a Blast Furnace. If you are endeavoring to explore the Mistlands, you’ll need equipment forged from Black Metal. Structures like the Eitr Refinery and Sap Extractor also require this late-game resource. Nevertheless, you won’t be able to utilize this metal material until you’ve unlocked and constructed the Blast Furnace in Valheim.
How To Get the Valheim Blast Furnace
The crafting recipe for the Blast Furnace in Valheim only becomes available after you’ve set up your first Artisan Table. This workstation is the same one needed to create the Spinning Wheel. To construct the Artisan Table, you’ll need 10 logs of Wood and two Dragon Tears from the mother dragon of the Mountains — Moder.

Before facing Moder, make sure you have a large stockpile of Fire Arrows, as Fire Damage is her weakness. Even if you’re a melee-focused fighter, you must become accustomed to ranged combat with a Bow since Moder is primarily an aerial boss in Valheim. Once slain, she’ll drop the Dragon Tears you need to make an Artisan Table.
Once your Artisan Table has been set up, you’ll gain access to several new structure recipes, including the Blast Furnace in Valheim. This refining workstation can be made using 20 chunks of Stone, five cubic Surtling Cores, 10 ingots of Iron, and 20 logs of Fine Wood. Surtling Cores are a resource commonly found in the Burial Chambers of the Black Forest. You’ll need to explore the Sunken Crypts of the Swamp for Scrap Iron. Fine Wood is chopped from Birch and Oak trees using a Bronze Axe.
The Blast Furnace is relatively tall, so we recommend you place it outside instead of in your crafting workshop. Make sure there’s space on the back and left sides of the kiln. The left side is where you’ll retrieve the refined Black Metal bars, and the back has a hole for inserting Coal for fuel. Of course, you could place a wall behind the Blast Furnace and attempt to squeeze your cursor to clip to the Coal insertion point. However, such a method might negatively affect your immersion. If you have no Black Metal Crap to smelt in your Blast Furnace, you can collect some by visiting your local Fuling villages in the Plains.
