It has been a long and fruitful 11 years for Warframe, full of ups and downs. The good news is, it’s not about to slow down sometime as Warframe has just hit its new milestone, the top of the Global Top Sellers chart in Steam. It beat out heavyweights such as Counter-Strike 2, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and even the landslide Game of the Year winner, Baldur’s Gate 3.
Warframe’s New Milestone, 11 Years in the Making
On January 18th, Rebecca Ford, Creative Director of Digital Extremes, Warframe‘s developer and publisher studio, took to Twitter/X to announce that Warframe has shot up to the number 1 spot on Steam’s Global Top Sellers chart.
Warframe notably advanced 13 places to the top, which is quite an impressive climb for a free-to-play game with no major expansion or DLC sale at the moment.
Rebbeca Ford also pointed out that the Warframe: Gauss Prime Access trailed close to the top of the chart. If anything, it might be an indication that the recently released Gauss Prime and its paid premium access package also helped catapult Warframe to the Top Sellers chart.
It’s also worth noting that what contributed to Warframe becoming the Top Seller on Steam (at the moment) was a combination of Platinum, Regal Aya, and Prime Access buyers among many other transactions and microtransactions in the game.
Warframe’s Rough Beginning Made This Milestone More Sentimental
Those who have been playing Warframe from or close to the beginning have a lot to recall and will know that Warframe almost never got to this point. During its first few years, Warframe actually struggled financially and Digital Extremes came close to shutting the project down.
In an effort to gain more financial backing, they released a special Warframe package, the Excalibur Prime Founder’s Pack, for a small group of players who latched on to the game despite the low player count and lack of popularity.
Through the help of the Founder players and Digital Extremes’ perseverance, Warframe got out of its negative loop and rough start. It is now a genre leader in the looter-shooter genre as well as a commendable example of a free-to-play gaming model.
