What Is the Red Sea in Sea of Thieves? Explained

The edge of the map isn’t pretty, is it?

Many pirates have tried to reach the world’s end in Sea of Thieves just to encounter the infamous Red Sea. Sailors who come across this incident might think it is an event of sorts or something they can explore in the hopes of earning some coveted loot. Sadly, the reality regarding these tainted waters is much simpler, and any brave, good-for-nothing pirate should man the ship and task the crew to raise the sales and get out of there as fast as possible.

What Does the Red Sea Do in Sea of Thieves? Answered

The real name of the Red Sea in Sea of Thieves is The Devil’s Shroud, which you can already assume isn’t something welcoming. Essentially, this is a mechanic that lets players know they’ve reached the edge of the map. Sailing toward it will gradually damage their ship until they respawn at a new one. This means that you can’t traverse it for a long period of time, with players reporting their ships getting obliterated after traversing one map square. However, there is one way to travel through this foggy area. If doing the Shores of Gold, players can obtain a Shroudbreaker to reach the area of this Tall Tale.

Overall, it is nice that the developers of Sea of Thieves included the Red Sea to let players know they’ve reached the end of the map. It is much more immersive than a simple system message or respawning out of the blue.

Still, if you dare, remember to grab the Shores of Gold Tall Tale to venture into this gloomy zone. It looks pretty scary, but it can feel immersive while traveling with your group of scoundrels. However, if you just want to lead your crew to its doom, there are better and more engaging ways to do it in the game, such as boarding other players or exploring any of the dangerous islands in this vast open sea.
