Some speeches stand out because of who is giving them, not just what they say. That was the case at a recent gathering outside a Florida detention facility, where the speaker had a life experience almost no one else in the crowd could claim.
The speech took place during a vigil held last week outside the South Florida Detention Facility, often called ‘Alligator Alcatraz.’ The event happened as detainees were being moved from the facility to other locations.
Robert Hilliard, a 100-year-old WWII veteran and Purple Heart recipient, spoke at the vigil. His speech was filmed and shared on Instagram by PhD student Thomas Kennedy, where it quickly gained thousands of views.
Hilliard began by saying he joined the Army in February 1944 when he was 18 years old. He was sent to Camp Blanding, near Jacksonville, Florida, for basic training.
He said the Army trained him “to kill people who had set up detention camps in Germany.” He added that he found it striking that a future detention facility was later announced at the same Camp Blanding site in Florida.
“Can you imagine how I felt earlier this year when they announced that one of the future detention camps would be at that same Camp Blanding in Florida? What remarkable irony!”
Hilliard then turned to politics. He said the country has gone through “a remarkable change” and described the current federal government as “fascist.” He said it “allows innocent people to be put in detention camps and incarcerated.”
He also pointed to figures showing that about 65,000 to 70,000 people are currently being held in immigration detention across the country. That estimate is similar to numbers tracked by the American Immigration Council.
Hilliard also claimed that only 29% of those being held have criminal records, while 71% “don’t belong there” based on the government’s own stated standards. Those figures are similar to data collected by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse. However, these statistics reflect Hilliard’s own framing of the issue.
He ended his speech by urging people not to ignore what is happening at facilities like the one in Florida. He called on the public to keep paying attention to the issue.
Internet Reacts to Veteran’s Viral Florida Detention Camp Speech
Reactions to Hilliard’s speech have been largely admiring, with many commenters praising both his message and his willingness to speak out at his age.
One commenter wrote: “Absolutely incredible speech, if only the entire country and world could take this man’s words to heart.”
Others focused on his firsthand experience with fascism. “An impassioned plea from a man who knows the dangers of fascism first hand. His wisdom is especially needed right now,” one person said.
Some responses centered on the emotional weight of his sacrifice. “Can’t imagine to be in his position. Bro gave his life and made so many sacrifices just to see this bullshit on his home soil,” another commenter wrote.
Others framed the speech as a warning sign in itself. “The fact that someone like him has to say this should be concerning to everyone,” one person argued.
A few tied his words directly back to his service. “Saw the horrors of war and endured to stop fascists. Don’t let his sacrifice be for nothing,” another commenter wrote.
As of this writing, the Florida detention facility remains at the center of a national debate over immigration enforcement, with supporters defending it as a necessary measure and critics warning about the symbolism and conditions surrounding the site. For veterans like him, the comparison clearly carries a deeper weight, turning the discussion into something larger than politics alone.
