“It’s Hip to Be Square,” sang 80s band Huey Lewis & The News, but there is no way this pop band could have predicted the extent to which technology and gaming would take over our lives. Today, binge-gaming is on the rise, as found in the State of Online Gaming 2020 report, which also highlights the popularity of console-less gaming services, mobile gaming, and casual single-player games such as Candy Crush, Spider Solitaire, and Angry Birds (as well as first-person shooting games). If you are a gaming fanatic who is about to celebrate your wedding, you may wish to lend a bit of geeky inspiration to your big day. There are many ways that you can express your love of gaming and technology, in everything from your fashion to your catering choice.
Geeky And Stylish
Weddings are characterized by traditional outfits for brides and grooms – including flowing white dresses, elegant tuxedos, and three-piece suits. If you wish to look the part in your wedding photos, but you want to remain a bit playful, consider layering it up a bit. If you are a groom, then you, your best man, and your closest friends and family members can wear themed outfits beneath your tuxes that you can open for a few fun pics. If you are into superheroes, for instance, each of you can wear a different superhero logo beneath your shirts. Brides and grooms can also wear ‘figurine brooches’ featuring their favorite gaming characters. The best thing about brooches is that they can easily be removed for more ‘serious’ shots.
Gaming Inspired Food
If you are including children in your wedding, they will no doubt enjoy kid-friendly and gaming-centered foods. Think edible Lego wedding favors, a wedding cake that is entirely built around a city your favorite game is set in, or a cake designed around the main theme of games you (and the kids in your life) enjoy. Some weddings with children invitees have dedicated kids’ or teen zones featuring everything from gaming themed cupcakes to figurine wedding favors and sweets. In addition to offering them creative foods, you can always set up a dedicated table for teens, providing them with games, printables, and gaming-inspired activities for after their meal. Don’t disappoint with your wedding cake, either. Instead of the traditional round/tiered cake, consider creating different ‘levels’ featuring scenes from one or more games, topping your cake with gaming characters instead of traditional bride/groom cake figurines.
Themed Décor
If you love a game with passion (think GTA, Zelda, or Minecraft), then you could decide to theme the entire wedding hall, using a game as inspiration. If Minecraft brought you and your loved one together, for instance, features such as red brick interiors, hanging vines and trellises, large decorative figures (think the pigs, creepers, and Steve), strategically placed around your chosen venue could add a touch of magic that guests will love to immerse themselves in. Add to the ambiance with dance versions of gaming music to ensure that all your friends and family who enjoy this pastime rush to the dance floor to join in the celebration.
If you love gaming and all things geeky for a wedding – and you are getting married – expressing your passion on your big day is a great way to make it memorable and fun. From food to décor and music to interiors, there are so many ways to imbue your celebration with playful fun. If children are attending your wedding, make sure they enjoy the experience by creating a play area for them that includes food, toys, and games that can make the event feel like a party of their own.
