Hogwarts Legacy wouldn’t be much of a Harry Potter game if it didn’t have some incredible magic. Thankfully, you can live out your wizarding fantasies in style thanks to the game’s excellent spells. Whether you’re opening locks, concealing yourself from prying eyes, or blasting your enemies into oblivion, there’s probably a spell in the wizarding world to meet your needs. It’s been a while since the game was released, so we’ve updated our list to reflect our evolving thoughts on these abilities. Each of them has its pros and cons, but there’s no debate that these rank amongst the best spells in Hogwarts Legacy. Here they are, ranked from good to fantastic.
10. Arresto Momentum
Sometimes taking an opponent down requires a less than straightforward approach. Arresto Momentum allows you to slow your foe’s movement. Though that isn’t as terrifying as killing them outright, it’s a fantastic utility ability that comes in handy in a variety of situations. To learn this spell, players must complete Madam Kogawa’s second assignment. Like several other spells, you can use Arresto Momentum for the Dark Arts talent. You can even perform Petrificus Totalus after you’ve suspended your opponent in mid-air. Though you’ll undoubtedly find this to be one of the best spells in Hogwarts Legacy, you’ll need to advance a ways in the story to use it.

9. Diffindo
Sometimes what you need is an all-out assault. Diffindo is that kind of spell, allowing you to execute a flaming slash attack. You can use this against objects as well as distant enemies. One of its only real flaws is its relatively long cooldown. It’s a potent tool in your magical repertoire, but you’re going to want some other options to back it up. On the plus side, you can use Diffindo from a much greater distance than some other spells in Hogwarts Legacy, so if you need to keep your distance from a troublesome enemy, this is the spell for you.
8. Glacius
You can unlock Glacius by completing Madam Kogawa’s first assignment. Like Diffindo, Glacius has a cooldown. Because of that, you’ll want to take a more strategic approach to your casting rather than just spamming spells. Unlike Diffindo, this spell is about more than simply dealing damage to your enemies. Glacius freezes your target in place, leaving them vulnerable to follow-up attacks. It also increases the amount of damage the target takes, ensuring that they’ll feel whatever you hit them with next.
7. Expelliarmus
From regular fights to boss battles, Expelliarmus can get players through many tough encounters. In addition to being a great way to disarm lesser enemies in Hogwarts Legacy, Expelliarmus can be combined with a Dark Arts curse talent to deal raw damage. During combat, knocking your enemies’ wands from their hands forces them to waste time retrieving them before they can cast again. There’s a reason Epelliarmus was Harry’s go-to spell throughout the series, and with a bit of practice, it can become one of the best spells in Hogwarts Legacy.
6. Confringo
Another great spell in Hogwarts Legacy is Confringo. It’s a long-range bolt that deals damage on impact and sets enemies ablaze, and with a talent upgrade, it can be truly great. If enemies remain on fire, any subsequent effect will result in an incendiary burst. The Confringo Mastery art takes the experience to another level. When the initial blast strikes the target, two smaller fireballs spawn and seek out the two enemies closest to them. Confringo is both powerful and dependable, making it a staple in the arsenal of most witches and wizards.
5. Bombarda
There are spells you use on minor minions and spells you use on difficult foes that demand the best from you. Bombarda is the latter. When cast, it creates a blast of energy and explosion that sends any nearby enemies flying. The spell’s major drawback is its long cooldown, so you won’t be able to rely on it all the time. That said, it’s a powerful piece of magic that can be depended upon to shred through groups of weaker enemies. Unlock this spell by completing Professor Howin’s assignment and you’ll see why it’s one of the best in Hogwarts Legacy.
4. Accio
Hogwarts Legacy isn’t just about blasting goblins. The game contains a number of puzzles you’ll need to solve, too. Arguably no spell is more important for puzzle-solving than Accio. This spell can summon various objects and enemies, making it useful for puzzles as well as combat. With the Accio Mastery talent, the player can pull multiple enemies at once. That’s ideal for setting up groups for a cast of Bombarda or similar magic. You’ll gain access to this powerful bit of sorcery after completing the Charms class.
3. Crucio
The three Unforgivable Curses rank amongst the best spells in Harry Potter but also the most evil. Crucio is a torture spell, causing its target excruciating pain. In mechanic terms, it functions as a damage-dealing stun attack. Enemies afflicted by Crucio cannot cast spells, so it’s ideal for locking down an enemy spellcaster. One of the best aspects of Crucio is that it causes damage over time, so it’s perfect if you want to set up a nasty combo. If you’re willing to use even the most devilish tools at your disposal, Crucio is one you can’t miss.
2. Imperio
There are only two spells more dispicable and powerful than Crucio, and the first spell is Imperio. This Unforgivable Curse allows the player to take command of enemies, forcing them to fight on the player’s behalf as if they were allies. The best part is that enemies under your control take reduced damage from others, which keeps them in the fight longer. Sebastian Sallow offers to teach you Imperio during In the Shadow of Time, but you can decline his offer if you want. Depending on your choices, you may get a second chance to learn this spell later on, if you have second feelings about mind control.
1. Avada Kedavra
Avada Kedavra is one of the best spells in Hogwarts Legacy, which is no surprise considering it’s one of the best spells in the novels. The Killing Curse does exactly what you would expect: killing any enemy it strikes, regardless of their size or health. The ability to kill anything you strike is OP for obvious reasons, which makes it extremely fun if you’re into the dark wizardry thing. Killing an enemy with Avada Kedavra kills all cursed enemies, which gives it incredible combo potential if you’re clever. Unsurprisingly, you learn this spell late in Hogwarts Legacy, after you complete Sebastian Sallow’s questline.
