Larian Studios Confirms Future Plans For Baldur’s Gate 3

All good things must come to an end.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was one of the most successful games of 2023. Not only did it take off the coveted Game of the Year award at the TGAs, but it also sold over 10 million copies worldwide. After a remarkable success like that, it would be fair to assume the series will continue like before, and fans likely had expectations of Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC or even a sequel, Baldur’s Gate 4, sometime down the line. But it seems that is not the case.

The CEO of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, was speaking on stage at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2024. He made a shocking announcement that no one in the industry was expecting. He said that Larian Studios is not going to pursue Dungeons & Dragons-style games anymore, permanently. As the final nail in the coffin, he confirmed that there will be no major expansion or DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3. As for the series continuing after the third installment, according to Vincke, that is definitely not happening.

Baldur’s Gate 2 came out in the year 2000, and its sequel made its way into players’ hands well over two decades after its predecessor and hit it out of the park in every way. But clearly, a game of such immense scale takes an extreme amount of development time and effort, something that may not be feasible with the rising costs of video game development.

But before the doom and gloom hits, Larian Studios is just not going to pursue Baldur’s Gate — this does not mean it is going away for good. Vincke says that the team wants to pivot from its past works and create something entirely new. This should sound very exciting to every Larian fan out there.

This doesn’t mean that the Baldur’s Gate 3 community will be left out in the dust. The developers confirmed that there won’t be any major updates, but support should continue as before. Larian has been listening to its fans and making changes accordingly, something that shouldn’t change for the foreseeable future.
