A shocking moment happened to Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo while they were presenting an award at the BAFTA Film Awards. While both actors were presenting the award for Best Visual Effect, a White man with Tourette’s, named John Davidson, yelled the n-word at them. Many people sympathized with everyone involved, including Davidson, but not everyone shared the same sympathy. Now, Jamie Foxx is leaving comments online saying that Davidson meant to say the racial slur.
The video where Davidson shouted the slur has gone viral quickly, and this made people start offering explanations for his behavior and mentioning his Tourette’s. Alan Cumming, who was hosting the event, even had to address what happened. “You may have noticed some strong language in the background there; this can be part of how Tourette’s syndrome shows up for some people as the film explores that experience,” Cumming told the audience as according to The Mirror.
Several news outlets targeted toward Black audience also shared the shocking video. In two posts by two different outlets, Jamie Foxx expressed his opinion. He was definitely against Davidson. In a post made by The Neighborhood Talk, Foxx wrote several comments blaming Davidson. “Nah he meant that [expletive],” was one of them. Another comment was, “Out of all the words, you could’ve said Tourette’s makes you say that?” He also described the situation as “unacceptable.” Foxx also left a comment under a post made by The Shade Room. “[expletive] that. He knew what [expletive] he was doing. Why didn’t he yell at out when somebody else was on stage?”
People Reacting to Jamie Foxx Blaming Davidson
A lot of people, especially Black individuals, agreed with what Jamie Foxx said and that Davidson meant to say the racial slur. One person who agreed with him said, “Yea he knew, they probably was laughing when they got n car.” Another person even believed that Davidson didn’t have Tourette’s as they wrote, “because the man never had Tourette’s. We can never have anything without one of them ruining the moment.” Someone else said, “I said the same thing Jamie! I get Tourettes can be an off guard, random thing. If he wasn’t already thinking it, it would have not come out his mouth. He knew [expletive] was going on.”
More Black people shared the same opinion as Foxx as one person wrote, “They be having Dementia, Alzheimer’s, and a few other things & still remember that word.” Another person didn’t want to see anyone defending Davidson. “Yall better not be tryna defend this on black history month…” Someone else believed that Davidson had the slur in mind as they said, “This just mean it was already on his mind.. he just couldn’t hold it in. Crazy.” When another person tried to disagree, the same person replied, “I know it don’t make you racist??? Just like I said, it was in his mind and he couldn’t control not yelling it out.” You could understand why people are angry.
