Not many people can enter an ICE detainment facility. While there are some leaked videos showing how horrible life is inside, it’s rare to hear a full explanation of what exactly is going on inside the building. Well, Texas Representative Joaquin Castro has just finished visiting the Dilley detention center in Texas. This isn’t the first time he entered the building, as he also visited it three weeks prior. He said that the situation had gotten much worse after his first visit.
The first thing he mentioned was how the pregnant women were intentionally hidden from the Texas representative. He claimed that there are eight pregnant women inside the Texas facility, with one of them being eight months pregnant. The women were allegedly sent to an OB-GYN in Laredo because of the doctor’s orders. The Texas representative didn’t believe their words, as the most common complaints were about the lack of medical care within the facility. Castro said that other detainees in the facility told him that the pregnant women weren’t in great condition. One of the women, who was three months pregnant, was reportedly bleeding heavily and would likely have a miscarriage.
The Texas representative also mentioned how a mother and her 2-month-old baby with bronchitis were abandoned on the Mexico border. The only reason they were not in an even worse situation was thanks to American citizens with enough compassion and kindness to donate their own money to help the mother and child. The Texas representative said that this was just the DHS and ICE trying to protect their reputation and scrambling to control the narrative.
The internet quickly erupted in outrage after hearing the Texas representative’s account. Many described the treatment of detainees as a clear human rights violation. “Dilley will go down in infamy as one of, if not the worst of America’s concentration camps. Absolutely abhorrent,” one Redditor said.
Others questioned why more hasn’t been done and why the situation has been allowed to worsen. “It’s embarrassing to be an American right now. We treat US murderers and criminals better than this. This is a disgrace. What is wrong with our government!?! We demand that this abuse stops and that something is done. ACTION!!!” another commenter wrote.
At the same time, some users expressed appreciation for the Texas representative’s efforts, saying they were glad he was speaking publicly about what he witnessed inside the ICE facility in Dilley. “Love how he is being so proactive about this. Thank you!!!” one user said.
