A woman exposes the racism of a supposedly liberal California town. The video posted on her TikTok channel, kylie.brewer, calls out a region where she “went to high school and spent a lot of time growing up.” This is located on the coast of California, near the town of Santa Maria. She specifically addresses a racist local phenomenon called Santa Maria Saturday.”
The video starts with the Illinois woman saying, “White liberals can be just as racist as conservatives.” She explains, “There’s a series of bars located in a downtown area, and locally there is this other town called Santa Maria.” The town of San Luis Obispo is known for its “high Hispanic population” and for being liberal. However, she supports this statement with a screenshot revealing a sheriff’s report “finds systematic racism in the county.” She points out that, “unfortunately, in California, the primary target of racism, [she] would say, throughout much of the state is Mexican people.” The Illinois woman adds that this is due to “the immigration crisis,” along with “people’s general ignorance.”
The Illinois woman continues, explaining why it’s called Santa Maria Saturdays. This is “when most of the white locals boycott the bars on Saturday.” The reason for this is that this “is when the folks from Santa Maria come to the bars on Saturday nights.” This is the night when many Santa Maria locals “go out and celebrate.” However, for the locals in this coastal town, this is a night that they “do not go out.” The woman describes this as a “modern-day version of self-segregation.”
They have a “ton of excuses” for not doing so. These include “how things get rowdy or dangerous those nights.” She confirms that this “obviously isn’t true.” The Illinois woman adds, “Absolutely, this is rooted in racism.” She shares that the “crazy part is that they will deny that this is racist.” The woman says, “They truly do not believe that there is anything wrong with this.” She adds that “they think it just happens to be ‘more dangerous’ on Saturday nights.” The video includes the news headline, “City of SLO experienced [the] most reported hate crime events in the county.” Another one reads, “White supremacists keep showing up in SLO county.”
The video concludes with the Illinois woman calling the locals “cowards” for the behavior. Those in the comments agree with her statements. One comment refers to this process as “part of the ‘Nice white people’ phenomenon.” They explain that white people “may vote blue on paper but still don’t want anything to do with us.” Another agrees, “that a lot of the ‘nice progressive white people’ are only blue leaning bc they want the benefits for themselves, not everyone else.”
