Missouri Veteran Says ‘I Would Have Joined, But’ Rhetoric Helped Push U.S. Toward War with Iran: ‘He Had Bone Spurs’

I’m sure we’ve all heard variations of this excuse, veteran or not

So many U.S. veterans are seeing things for what they really are. As we enter war with Iran alongside Israel, things become more and more alarming on a daily basis. One Afghan veteran and bestselling Missouri author, Jason Kander, says he knows the “real reason we’re at war with Iran.” As he puts it, far too few people actually stand up for their country when they know it’s headed toward disaster and that’s a major problem.

Jason (@jasonkander) shared his personal “veteran POV” on why he thinks the U.S. is currently at war with Iran. Jason firmly believes that we’re at war because we have an “’I would have joined, but’ guy as President.” These are people who say they would join the military but then make an excuse as to why they haven’t.

@jasonkander

The real reason we’re at war with #Iran is we have an “I would’ve joined but” guy as President.

As Jason says, he’s met a lot of people just like the President. He even met one of those guys on his trip home from serving in Afghanistan in 2007. The plane was landing in Kansas City when the man turned to Jason. He said “Boy, I bet you’re glad to be home and away from” and used a racist term describing Afghan people. Jason turned to him and said, “Actually, I found that the people I met in Afghanistan were pretty wonderful.” The guy didn’t know what to say, so instead he told Jason his “I would have joined, but story.”

Jason says there are a few different variations of how people tell this story. He says his “favorite” one involves the person telling him, “I would have joined but, you know, I would have ended up getting in trouble.” He said another example of this is, “I would have joined but they said that I couldn’t go special forces so I wasn’t interested.” Jason says that a lot of these people, primarily men, act like “tough” guys who are “too tough for the army.”

Now, Jason says we have one of these guys as President. One of the guys who “grew up watching action movies, thinking that’s what it’s like and picturing himself doing it.” This is why Trump has his social media team edit AI photos of him looking like a soldier. It’s also why he panders to us and says he’s going to stop all wars. Then, he continues to move forward with them anyway. The U.S. has to be the biggest and strongest, right? Jason says doing this makes our President “feel like a big man.” He ends his video by saying, “He would have joined, but he was a coward.”

One commenter pointed out he didn’t join because “he had bone spurs.” Another commenter stated, “When he shrugged that soldiers might die but that’s just war, I could tell he enjoyed the power of ordering men to their possible deaths.” Other commenters discussed veteran’s opinions on Trump. One simply stated: “The fact that any vets support Trump in 2026 blows my mind.”
