A Pilates student in California got into an argument with another student, a pregnant lady, over the setup of her tripod. The student posted a video on TikTok, showing a part of the altercation. At the beginning, her camera was positioned to capture only her, doing her exercises on her mat. Soon, her camera shook and then fell. She then stopped her routine and told the woman who had hit her tripod to be careful, because she was knocking over other people’s things.
Before she could go back to her pose, the pregnant woman pushed her tripod stand, telling her that she could have just not brought one because it wasn’t allowed on the workout floor. The student immediately retorted that she should not touch her property, adjusting it back in place. A male voice, who was identified as the pregnant lady’s husband, joined the conversation, letting out a string of expletives at the student recording. Without missing a beat, she told him to stop talking to her. While the student went on with her exercises, the couple kept talking.
At the end of the clip, the student added an image from an email that the gym had sent, stating that tripods were not allowed only on the workout floor. However, that wasn’t the case in class environments. In the accompanying caption, she further defended herself, explaining that she always pushes her mat all the way to the back to avoid recording or disturbing anyone. Nevertheless, the pregnant woman still remained bothered by it.
Internet Divided About Wrong Party In Pilates Class
Many users stormed the comments, debating digital etiquette and public spaces. One user wrote, “What a hostile experience,” supporting the student. A second user shared a similar sentiment, arguing that if no one had any issues with it until this woman, then it was not her fault. An individual explained that although they were not fans of people recording in classes, the influencer was mindful of recording without capturing any other person.
“Mind you, i dont necessarily like when people record classes but you did this very mindfully and had no one else in your camera view. Yeah im on your side 100%.”
One supporter celebrated the student’s refusal to shrink when the pregnant woman’s husband questioned her importance. Someone else offered a balanced stance, noting people’s right to a private space, but criticized the pregnant lady’s approach. On the other hand, others believed the TikToker was definitely in the wrong. One user wrote, “I feel like videotaping in gyms should be banned. It causes so much drama.” Another agreed, “That would be so annoying. All studios should have a no phone policy.” A last user, fed up with the drama, idealized a return to an era before social media.
The altercation between the two students highlights a conflict between an individual’s right to create in a space and another’s right to the same space. Indeed, it seems social media has made personal interactions more complicated.
