A group of Black residents and protesters gathered in Memphis, Tennessee, following the controversial redistricting decision, where they confronted several politicians.
Recently, there has been significant online outrage following a Republican-backed redistricting effort in Tennessee. Critics of the plan have accused lawmakers of targeting the state’s majority-Black congressional district, arguing that the changes could weaken representation for Black voters. Many commenters and advocacy voices have described the move as a potential threat to voting rights and fair representation, framing it as part of a broader debate over electoral map changes and their impact on minority communities.
The Black community reacted to the decision by confronting politicians in Memphis. One female attendee shared a video of the confrontation on social media, writing, “Whoever told the hood about this told the right ppl.”
In the video, the crowd is shown moving among the politicians as they appear to be heading inside a building. The woman filming can be heard speaking to the group and telling them, “don’t run,” while recording one of the politicians. She then makes additional comments about the politician’s suit, and the video captures her using a racial slur directed at him.
She then directed additional insults toward another individual, mocking his appearance and commenting on his lack of hair, saying, “bald head.” In the background of the video, other members of the crowd can also be heard making separate comments during the confrontation.
The woman then continued filming and mocking another politician, comparing him to the fictional character Jimmy Neutron. She can be heard saying, “You think you did something, boy?” while recording him. Later in the video, she directed her attention to another man and appeared to challenge him to respond to her remarks.
She then addressed an older-looking politician, remarking on his age. “Your [expletive] one step away from the grave, my boy,” she said. Another Black man later appears in the footage, standing face-to-face with a politician while filming. In the background, the woman can be heard repeatedly saying “hit him.” It is unclear from the video whether she was directing the comment at the man or challenging the politician to respond.
In another part of the video, the woman can be seen cursing at another politician. She was also repeatedly pointing her finger near his face. The situation appears to escalate as the politicians begin attempting to walk away from the confrontation. At the same time, the same man from earlier is seen standing close to another politician. He was repeatedly saying, “What are you gonna do?”
At that point, state troopers appeared at the scene, but they also received verbal criticism from members of the crowd. The woman can be heard telling one trooper, “You better save them.” She also questioned another about how he goes home to his family after protecting the politicians. She then uses a racial slur directed at the same trooper. At the end of the video, she turns back toward the group of politicians. She then repeats, “screw y’all,” before the footage cuts off.
