A man working at a wildlife rehab center in East Lansing, Michigan, heard a baby fawn calling and rescued the animal in need. Tragically, in an update, the man revealed that the fawn had to be put down, and the internet is mad and sad.
The two clips in question were shared online by Sawyer Halbritter. He works at Nottingham Nature Nook, the aforementioned wildlife rehabilitation center, and he often shares content related to his job. The baby fawn story, however, quickly became viral, surpassing every video before by a long shot. The first clip alone garnered 8.6 million views, 1.8 million likes, and more than 8,700 comments.
The Michigan man detailed that he was doing field work when he heard a fawn calling. He immediately knew something was wrong, as the animal sounded in distress. Finally, he found the fawn, which had a very peculiar face, and was most likely struggling, judging by what little Sawyer showed.
“He’s a little wonky, but we’re gonna go and get him some fluids now,” he said. “And make sure that he has the best chance at growing up as he can.”
Many viewers initially reacted positively to the clip, many of them pointing out and even lightheartedly laughing at how the baby fawn looked. However, the comments section was soon flooded by other users who warned everyone not to watch Sawyer’s follow-up.
Baby Fawn Put To Sleep
The second clip, which was made available just hours after the first one, started with Sawyer warning others not to do what he did in the video. He explained that he is trained and that others could potentially make this worse if they take matters into their own hands. So far, so good.
However, Sawyer then gave some devastating news. The baby fawn had to be euthanized.
The Michigan man explained that while he was able to get her to drink from a bottle, she was having a hard time breathing at the same time. Intubation was attempted, but the wildlife center staff found that her mouth structure prevented her. This means, sadly, the ways of feeding her were extremely limited.
“Unfortunately, we don’t have any surgical resources at the rehab center that I’m at,” Sawyer explained. “So surgery wasn’t an option.”
Ultimately, they contacted a vet who said that the best course of action was euthanasia. Sawyer and the rest of the crew agreed.
Internet Devastated And Mad
The clips above sparked multiple responses online.
Some viewers were sad and angry that the fawn had to be euthanized, even bashing Sawyer as a result. One viewer said, “But she came to you for help…” Another commented, “Well, great, my day’s ruined.”
Most users, however, were far more understanding, knowing full well that, in some cases, the most humane way to proceed is to euthanize an animal who is suffering. One wrote, “She never suffered, and sometimes that’s the kindest thing we can do.” Another commenter added, “She knew love. And that’s what matters. Thank you for your kindness.”
Sawyer himself was sad about how things turned out. However, as he explained, these incidents do happen, and he has faced them many times in the past.
