Illinois Man Furious After Friend Allegedly Throws Away $800 of Furniture Left in Garage for 2 Years: ‘Friendship Means Nothing to Him’

What did he expect?

Favors between friends can become a dangerous game if mismanaged, and one man in Illinois decided his friendship was worth less than $800 in furniture. However, that’s just half the story, as this man had allegedly left the furniture at his friend’s home for almost 2 years and failed to retrieve it after being asked to do so. After six months of radio silence, the friend finally had to throw everything out after giving the owner a 30-day warning.

I helped a friend move two years ago and stored his furniture in my garage. He never collected it, I disposed of it after giving notice, now he wants $800.

The friend goes by Post-Modern_Trash on Reddit and explained his predicament on r/legaladvice. They recalled that initially, this acquaintance had asked to leave his furniture in their garage for free for a while as they got some things sorted out. “It wasn’t a few weeks. I texted him twice in the first year asking when he was coming to get it. He said he was still figuring things out,” Post-Modern_Trash wrote.

After 19 months had passed, Post-Modern_Trash finally got rid of the furniture after a 30-day notice they sent to their friend. A week later, the man reached out, furious. “Said he had been planning to come get it and that I had no right to touch his property. He wants $800 for what I threw out,” they wrote, and among the thousands who upvoted OP’s post, over a hundred commented on how that furniture owner doesn’t deserve a penny.

Reddit Slams Illinois Man for Taking Advantage of His Friend

“Two years of free storage is already more patience than most people would have given him,” remarked a Redditor. “That’s what I keep coming back to, I didn’t toss it after a month, it sat there for nearly two years,” Post-Modern_Trash said in response. “This was his way of proving your friendship means nothing to him,” wrote a second, with another user reassuring that a storage unit service would have done the same to the furniture.

Some people were certain that the owner and so-called friend might have actually been trying to intentionally get Post-Modern_Trash to throw out the furniture so he could then demand compensation. “It’s interesting that he wants money right after the 30 day notice and disposal. Like he was waiting for this or something. This really sounds like he is now trying to scam you out of $800,” pointed out a commenter.

Whatever the case, though, many Reddit users don’t think OP will be bothered by this Illinois man anytime soon. Not only is filing a small claims case between $300 to $400, but the alleged evidence in texts and the almost two years of ‘free’ storage are likely enough to swing the courts in OP’s favor. At the very least, Post-Modern_Trash now has confirmation of what his friendship meant to this individual.
